Teaching Grammar – One Reason Diagramming is the Best
When you get dressed in the morning, do you put your shoes on first and then your socks over them? Do you teach algebra when your child has not yet mastered simple addition and subtraction?
Of course, the answer to these questions is no. Unless you’re trying to make a bold fashion statement that gets your socks dirty or play a practical joke on your child, don’t do either of these things. Construction is one of the best ways to learn grammar for the same reason that shoes come after socks and teach kids addition and subtraction before algebra.
When we learn grammar by diagramming sentences, we first introduce the simplest grammatical elements (subjects and verbs) and gradually build up the more complex elements. Diagramming sentences follows a logical order (like wearing shoes!) and naturally builds up your grammatical knowledge. Be ready to tackle the concepts that are ready, and leave the harder concepts behind until you are ready to tackle them.
This is good news. Because it avoids the inevitable confusion I found when my teacher taught me gerunds when I still had a precarious understanding of nouns and verbs. It’s okay if you don’t know what is, I didn’t either, they’re nouns disguised as verbs – those tricky little devils!) If you don’t fully understand the function of the gerund, Very difficult to grasp. Nouns and verbs. It’s like a painter trying to mix orange when there’s no yellow or red. Letting painters do this work can be very frustrating and make you never want to paint again. Giving students this task can be very frustrating and they may never want to do it again.
The order in which the topics required for construction are learned is beneficial not only for the student, but also for the teacher. As a teacher, figuring out what to teach in the best order to ensure student understanding can be very difficult. The nature of construction determines the order in which topics are taught, ensuring that students master each concept before moving on to the next.
Oh, did we mention that it’s fun to diagram sentences? Seriously. After teaching grammar to different grades, I am constantly amazed by both the excitement my students exude while constructing and the level of understanding and retention of the concepts covered during construction.
By schematizing your sentences, you introduce grammatical elements in a natural and flowing way to keep your students engaged and excited about learning. It’s innovative because it means that everyone can learn easily, retain what they learn, and have fun learning. Isn’t that something worth investigating?
