Avoiding Stress Before Cheerleading Competitions

Cheerleading competitions are great and really stressful for everyone involved. Whether you’re a competitor, coach, or parent, here are some ideas on how to keep your stress levels in check.

First, be prepared. The best way to combat the stress of competition is to have a routine that everyone on the floor can learn and complete with confidence. From stunts to tumbling passes, make sure everyone’s timing is perfect before loading the van and heading out to the competition. This means that practice is important and make sure everyone is present at every practice. no excuses Even participants who may not be feeling well can join in and see and find out, so they can notice last-minute changes.

Then make sure your squad has what it takes. Does your routine require props (signs, megaphones, pom poms, flags, etc.)? Make sure they are loaded into your vehicle the night before you leave.

Triple check everything!

Third, make sure the uniforms worn by the competitors have everything you need. Purchase a jumbo size slider bag (2.5 gallon). Have the participant bring the necessary items (shoes, belly, seashell, skirt, socks, hair bow, spanky). Pack the finished uniform neatly in the slider bag. Label a bag with each participant’s name with a permanent marker. If possible, also pack extra uniform pieces of different sizes. Keep all your uniforms together! Do not give it to the participant until it is ready.

Fourth is to pack a makeup kit. Please decide on your makeup color scheme and eye pattern before entering the contest. Do not experiment when you are at the venue! We have a dress rehearsal the night before the competition. If your team uses hairpieces, include them in your rehearsal and pack them with your makeup kit. If not, properly plan your hair rollers or curling irons for the style your team is using, and pack plenty of hairspray. Do the routine a few times for parents and students. Some teams charge admission as a fundraiser and invite schools and communities. They might serve a spaghetti dinner or a hot dog dinner along with entertainment.

Maintain two accordion folders containing copies of registration information. Give one to your assistant coach or trusted parent. Make sure schedules, payment confirmations, and other information about the contest are kept in the accordion folder.

It is also important to reduce parental stress as much as possible. Their children perform in front of large crowds. They’ve probably spent a lot of time and money on cheerleading at this point. They want a good reward and happy kids when it’s all over. Make sure you have a schedule of events highlighting team times and stages, pre- and post-competition meeting points, award ceremony schedules, and lists, if any. Where to Stay and Eat When it comes to travel arrangements, many parents prefer to “book” together. Make sure your team knows in advance where they will be staying so this is an option for them. Always keep parents informed of possible schedule and venue changes. You can set up a phone tree, but it doesn’t always work. Keep parents informed of event progress with email, text alerts, and Facebook notifications.

Preparation checklist:

1. The routine has been practiced successfully many times with no errors.

2. Each coach has at least two copies of the competition music.

3. All props are considered and packed.

4. There are two folders containing all registration information.

5. All uniforms are packed, labeled and moved together.

6. All makeup kits are packed.

7. All parents have several ways to contact us to keep our schedule up to date.

8. The room reservation (if required) is prepaid and confirmation is in hand.

9. Departure times allow for delays, hair and makeup issues, and several run-throughs prior to competition.

10. Have your Participant Waiver Form with your insurance information on hand. These are often sent at the time of registration. Please keep a copy with you!

Some useful tips for multitasking coaches:

1. Apply petroleum jelly to your teeth to keep your lips from curling and sticking together. It’s funny, but it works!

2. Spray some hairspray on your thighs and buttocks to keep your spanky from rising during your routine.

3. Artist brushes are very effective when doing eye makeup. The long handle allows you to work without hitting the girl’s face.

4. If the team has room, use hairpieces. They’re a lot easier than trying to do your hair for every competition.

5. Girls’ makeup is always the same. Same color and “design” on her eyes and face.

6. Bring extra hairpins, extra hair ties and extra safety pins.

7. Don’t get emotional in front of your team before the game. Don’t be surprised if someone drops a stunt during practice. Don’t cry or laugh hysterically (either way works). Wait until they are off the playing floor. If someone makes a mistake, try not to dwell on it. When that happens they get bad enough.

8. If you can afford it, or if your parents can help, have a small gift ready for when the kids are done. Whether it’s a keychain or a stuffed toy to commemorate their athletic achievements, it means a lot to them.

The more you prepare, the more stressed you feel. Less stress for you means less stress for your participants!
