Accelerate Your Language Learning: Create Your Own Vocabulary Building Activities Part 1

If your English EFL, ESL, or foreign language learning students ask, “Teacher, how can I learn more words faster?” That’s the answer. Create your own TEFL vocabulary building games, activities and puzzles for her to increase her vocabulary in record time. Not sure what to do? Below are some suggestions.

complete the chart

First, fill out a chart of foods under categories such as:

• fruit

• vegetable

• Meat and protein

• Seafood

• Dairy products

• Grains and starch

You can use dictionaries, talk with classmates and friends, and look at pictures. We do whatever we can to get the largest possible list as quickly as possible. Once you’ve “stuck” your vocabulary enough, use it to reinforce it in other activities such as:

Create a word search puzzle

Create a 15-space by 15-space grid on a letter-sized sheet. You can use your computer or draw by hand. Leave space for titles and other data at the top of the page. The bottom of the seat needs even more space. This will be the space for the word list. Then use any of the words from the chart to create a list of about 25-30 words at the bottom of the puzzle page. Then use those words to fill in the spaces in the grid. Use as much space as possible horizontally, vertically, diagonally and even backwards.

If you are using this exercise in your class, students exchange papers to solve each other’s puzzles. You can also check for errors, omissions, missing words and letters. Make the most of peer correction.

Categories to use

A word list is created using the relevant theme of the class. Examples of repeatable “evergreen” themes include:

• Clothing and colors

• Occupation – work

• Food and food categories

• body parts

• Home furniture and rooms

• Animals and Pets

• City in your state or country

• World cities and countries

• Famous – historical people and places

Verbs (Regular or Irregular)

• Music (artist, type, instrument, etc.)

The list of possibilities is virtually endless. You can also use the same categories and word lists for other exercise types covered in Part 2 of this series.

Three of my favorite puzzle-making programs are available online.

• The Puzzle Maker website http://www.puzzlemaker.com is the simplest and easiest of the three puzzle-making programs. You can also create word searches and other types of puzzles. Available online for free, can be learned in minutes, no downloads or prior knowledge required.

• Hot Potato website where you can create puzzles [http://web.uvis.ca/hrd/halfbaked/] More complex than Puzzle Maker, but fairly easy to manage. A demo version is available online for free. The full version only requires free registration if you are in the US.

If you are an artist who likes bright colors, paints, paints, draws cartoons, creates, and makes crafts, your brain is highly developed in the visual-spatial domain. Do jigsaw puzzles stimulate and stimulate your brain? Then visit this website to learn more and try out visual and spatial activities. You can create or associate a word list with each puzzle that can be downloaded for free from:

• Free Jigsaw Puzzle Download http://zone.msn.com/deluxegames/

Part 2 of this series continues with suggestions to increase your English vocabulary as quickly as possible in order to learn English as a foreign or second language. Exactly the same techniques apply when developing foreign language vocabulary. The next section will focus on creating specialized puzzles such as crossword puzzles. For this we will use the same vocabulary list that we have already created. See you in Part 2.
