Learning To Stilt Walk

I have been walking on stilts for over ten years. I have performed at various venues and events around the world. From TV commercials and casino stages to Indy parades and music festivals. After successfully teaching many people to walk on stilts as well as fall, I can confidently say that my technique worked. This is the quickest and easiest way to become a confident stilt walker.

How do I learn to walk on stilts

The best and most obvious way to learn to walk on stilts is with a tutor. However, this is not always possible.

which stilts do i use

There are three main types of stilts used by stilt pedestrians today. The most commonly used stilts are “unipolar” stilts. These props have been used in circuses for centuries. Most people are familiar with these. Another type of commonly used post is the “drywall” post. These stilts are hinged with a wide base to make them more stable. These were developed primarily for plasterers. Third, “power riser” stanchions are commonly used. These allow stilt walkers to leap, jump and run.

what is the best

The best type of stilts to use depends on the type of activity you want to do. Things to consider are:

o the type of character/work you play/do; and/or

o Costume design/weight.and/or

o costume height; and/or

o The type of exercise you plan to do.and/or

o the environment in which they are used;

Drywall stilts are the easiest to use and the easiest to learn. This is the closest thing to walking on your own feet! However, they also have disadvantages. Especially repairs can be expensive. They have large feet, which limits their costume use. These are really for beginners. However, professional stilt walkers use them in limited situations for specific performances.

Pole stilts are the most commonly used stilts by performers. These are much more difficult to learn. However, mastering the pole stilt allows for more graceful movements. There are many variations, from self-made wooden posts to aluminum posts. Some have braces on the back, others on the sides. Some stilts use Velcro his straps and some bolt on the shoes. Bolted shoes are more secure because the Velcro allows more movement of the foot, which is generally undesirable. Side braces can feel more secure against advanced movements It happens often.

Finally, there is a powered jumping platform. These have curved, spring-loaded poles that use the downward force of your body weight to provide lift, much like you strap a trampoline to your feet. These are great fun and can get you big air and speed ups. Costumes may be restricted with powered jumping stilts. These certainly take some practice. Due to the acrobatic nature of the exercises they allow, these are hard to make more advanced!

additional equipment

There are some additional equipment that I recommend. First (and most importantly), knee pads are a must, even at the pro level. These can save you from serious injury. Second, shin pads are great for making stilts more comfortable. Shin pads protect your feet from the straps as your feet can be quite sore after a long walk or performance. Also, absolute beginner wrist guards and a helmet will help protect you from most falls.

I have stilts now. how do i start???

This is the best way to learn stilts I’ve found. Always kneel when you fall!!!!!

First, find a friend who is willing to support your weight. Then find a place where you can secure the rope between two points, such as two trees or his two lampposts, a telegraph pole, or even a goalpost. To start walking on stilts, it is easier to walk on hard ground because it is more stable. The rope should fit between your hips and armpits while on stilts. You will also need something to sit on and ride on stilts. Car roofs are generally pretty good for sitting on. Something a little taller than stilts makes the transition from sitting to standing easier. I can.

Keep your feet about shoulder width apart. Remember to keep your feet straight and your toes pointing forward, as if you were walking on your heels. Start by standing upright and facing the rope with the rope safely under one arm. This is for grabbing if you lose your balance. First, practice “marking time”. Lift each leg so that the stilt leg is about 6 inches above the ground, then lower it back into place. Repeat with the other leg, shifting the weight from one leg to the other. I can’t sit still until I’m a master!!! Think of it like riding a bike. When learning to ride a bicycle, it is difficult to learn how to stay still without falling over.

Once you feel comfortable and in control of the weight of the stilts, try taking a few small steps. This is the same as before, but with your feet slightly forward. you are moving now! When you reach the end of the rope, pivot on one leg and turn. This is usually a good time to ask a friend to wait. After about 20 minutes the pain barrier tends to pass. Once you get past this pain barrier, walking will be easier – promise.

When you feel confident, ask your friend to step away from the ropes and walk towards them. Be prepared to catch you if you fall. Do this every day for a week (or as often as possible). By the end of this period, you will be a confident stilt walker. Once you’re comfortable walking, try new things like running, skipping, pirouettes, and managing slopes.

technique tips

To walk on stilts, you have to fall forward, just like you would normally walk. However, if you lean too much, you will fall down unless you move forward.

Always kneel when you fall. This is what knee pads are for. If you are lying on your back, twist your body to your knees. If you stick your hand out, you are more likely to break your arm. Also, I don’t want to lie on my back. This is when the most serious injuries occur.

Learn pirouettes and get out of them because they help you recover from falls. Also, you can usually prevent a fall by taking a little step, but if you step too far, your legs will be open or, in the worst case, your kneecaps will be strained.
