Current State of Copyright Awareness in Education
Many researchers believe that the rate of frequent copyright violations among students and other users of copyrighted materials in an academic setting is an indication that copyright awareness is still extremely low, especially now that technology has made it easier to photocopy, plagiarize, and otherwise pirate people’s materials. It shows that there is little respect for creativity, so copyright protection is considered unnecessary. The high price of high-quality foreign books is another major factor. However, it is worrying to note again that the issue of copyright has now become a global concern and the violation of copyright law has also gained prominence, especially in the academic environment where there is a larger group of users of copyrighted materials. For example, in an educational institution where lecturers rely on copyrighted materials to teach their students, as the students also often refer to copyrighted materials to meet their educational requirements, in such an environment, it is admitted that lack of awareness of copyrights may result in uncontrolled copyright infringement activities.
The fact that what is relevant in other foreign universities seems to be absent in most universities in Ghana on copyright awareness is of great concern to the copyright industry.
One might even wonder what happens in a university that has no copyright policy and access in this age where copyright infringement has become more prominent with the advent of advanced technology, as literary works that are expected to be copyrighted can now be copied and used. The situation in most schools in Ghana reveals that many students, who cannot afford the prices of materials and textbooks, are now photocopying essential texts and materials for their education at low cost to the detriment of copyright holders.
However, one can only conclude that the damages caused by copyright infringement do not only affect authors but also publishers and other stakeholders in the publishing industry as a whole.
Given that schools are some of the main users of copyrighted materials in Ghana, it is fair to conclude that based on the role of copyright in our knowledge-based economy, it is important that any serious inquiry into the issue of Intellectual Property (IP) should consider this important role of copyright in the production and dissemination of knowledge. and knowledge-based products.
This is because most schools in Ghana have library blocks with resources on various copyrighted materials that are available to both students and lecturers for students to produce term papers, essays, report, thesis or dissertation, essays, journals and other scholarly publications. .and lecturers.This suggests that schools must be positioned to effectively support their academic and institutional values and protect their mission of teaching, research and service through effective copyright awareness.
