Artist Profile – Jef Stott

I recently returned to Joshua Tree, CA for the 7th Annual Joshua Tree Music Festival. Excited to hear that Jef Stott will perform his second performance at this event. The first was a performance with his group, The Embarca Sound Project, and the next day, with great bassist and world musician Josie Fine. Both shows were great, mixing Middle Eastern and Western sounds. Jeff is a true world musician and the oud is his main “axe”, but he can tear it apart with a few instruments. had. I found his story fascinating. He comes from a very diverse musical background being a musical anthropologist and has worked and produced with many talented musicians.

We had a short interview. Here is part 1:

>I’m with producer/composer Jef Stott who just finished a great set with Yossi Fine. Also, last night you played with Hooman on his system at Embarka Sound. What about working with and producing artists with different styles and backgrounds?

“Well, playing with artists from all over the world is what I am all about. Each one brings a sensibility and direction to the culture that is expressed through music. Even people in different areas within the same county have different takes on the same melody.Regional differences rather than national differences, smaller and more subtle shifts. It In addition, most lines on the map are arbitrary anyway. There is also the concept of time, many. People from different regions play music. When we weren’t in such a hurry and constantly multitasking. I often look up from a nice long jam session and like 3 or 4 hours went by and it seemed like 45 minutes. To come full circle, this music feels like it’s looking to the future. Experiment with what new combinations fit. People all over the world start rebelling with really hot beats and these ancient gorgeous melodies Already seen in India, Brazil, Egypt, etc… blues and rock and roll look pretty flat.”

>What is your musical background? What instruments did you study/play?

“I started playing acoustic guitar in middle school. I quickly moved to electric, and by the time I was 15, I was the lead guitarist in a heavy metal band. As a teenager, I was playing rock clubs in LA. , Eno, Peter Gabriel, Clash and the global musical explosion of the 80s. Now we have percussion instruments such as stringed acoustic/electric guitar, bass, oud, saz, cumbass, yari tambur (Turkish), santur/hammered dulcimer (Persian) mandolin, banjo, etc. , riqq, tarr, bendir daff (Iranian) drum kit djembe conga etc. I’m a decent keyboard player and also play harmonium and melodica in dub jams.

>How did last year’s Saracen releases change in terms of your overall exposure? Do you think the world tour was amazing?

“Yes, signing Six Degree has been a goal of mine for many years. Relationships soured, internally disbanded for a while but I stayed connected with the label and even after 10 years…Six Degrees really put me on the map and I’m grateful .It was a dream two years to share the stage with my heroes like Gaudí, Makyo, Karsch, Heb-i-Sabba…Now it feels great to be in the same company as these artists. Dates in Miami, Tokyo, Vancouver, Taipei, everything was amazing. So many stories…”

> Jeff, you have a very deep knowledge of music. Anthropologically researching music, he has worked with and produced many great musicians like Yoshi here at Joshua His Tree Music Festival. How has the global electronica movement grown? Do you think it’s becoming more popular in America?

“I think it’s slowly moving forward, but America is a pretty closed, self-centered, rock town, and I’ve heard rumors that disco will take over hip-hop in the next few years, but electronica is still marginalized.People sometimes don’t know how to handle this music. The rest of the world is very interconnected.France and Morocco are neighbors, right? The flow is more fluid This big corporate umbrella here called America. It’s why I moved to San Francisco from Los Angeles, where I was born and raised, and I think the movement is growing because we wanted more connectivity at the street level. ‘s best producers live here. icodemus, Zeb, Chehab, etc….but it’s not there. There’s a lot of work to do.You need to be constantly on the move to keep you busy. The festival circuit is really growing and that’s great.I heard that the line-up for this year’s J Tree Fest is really global. The global music has buoys, so it’s very suitable for outdoor festivals. In a ritual sense, the origins of this fusion music are rooted in street parties and ceremonies around the world, so the purpose of this music is aligned with that of many who attend festivals like Joshua Tree. Reconnect with Earth, People, Spirits.”

>What are your future plans (musically)?

“Well, I’m just about to complete my master’s degree in multimedia, which has kept me pretty busy for the past six months or so. It’s a media-controlled biofeedback installation I’m itching to get back in the studio and write a new song. $% What are you going to do now?” Saracen’s material is something I’ve been playing live for a while and I’m ready to get some new stuff ready. I don’t really care about following the latest trends in , things are very fickle that way, this approach might take a few gigs, but I’m staying true to myself and We need to work on what has come out so far.” Sounds good to me, like a more lush and deep soundscape with strong beats and deep melodies. ”
