Brahms And Wagner Compared

Johannes Brahms and Richard Wagner were two titans of music during the 19th century. Brahms leaned towards the traditional while Wagner was more radical in his approach.

Brahms took his inspiration from earlier masters such as Mozart and Schubert. His music is always of the highest quality and incredibly polished. The same is true of Richard Wagner’s music, but Wagner’s music was more programmatic than Brahms’s. However, both men demonstrated a great understanding of music and how to make it a reality. Brahms wanted to expand the classical concept given to us by Mozart and Haydn. It took him years to finally write his first symphony, considered the greatest first symphony ever written and popularly called “Beethoven’s Tenth”. The sonata form was always adhered to in his music and very carefully developed; There is never any controversy in his music.

Wagner’s music, on the other hand, is radical from the beginning. His music is often long and heavy with a tendency to alternate. The prelude to the first act of Tristan und Isolde is written in such a complex way that even today it is not certain in what key it is written. Wagner did not work with the 12-tone scale but he pushed the music to its limits. Since Wagner wrote essentially only operas, he wanted to keep his audience focused on the drama, so he used what is known as the “motive” as a musical theme for each character and theme of his operas. This was fully performed in the famous “Ring” cycle (Der Ring Des Niebelungen) which is a series of four operas written to be heard on four consecutive days. It takes about 15 houses to sit through the whole job! The music in the cycle is radical at every point as Wagner uses music almost like film clips or soundtracks giving the audience more than they can handle. The biggest criticism against Wagner is the length of his operas and the lack of stage action.

Adding to the controversy of Wagner’s music was his personal lifestyle unlike any other composer before him. He would get involved in scandalous affairs and could never balance his checkbook. It took the funds of King Ludwig II of Bavaria to finance Tristan’s production and pay off his creditors.

Brahms, on the other hand, was never controversial and got along with everyone. His music is very similar to his personal lifestyle, which was polite and refined. He was very close to Sarah Schumann, wife of the famous composer Robert Schumann, and did much to promote her musical ability as a first-class pianist.

Despite the differences between these two men they have given us today a rich legacy of music that the world plays again and again for our enjoyment. We are fortunate to be the inheritors of such greatness.

Stephen F. Condran – Amen
