How Copyright Laws Fail Us When We Need Them Most

I used to worry that other people would steal my work. I do a lot of different types of things so there’s a lot to steal. In 35 years of business, I have produced a wealth of exceptional images, illustrations, graphic design, ads, websites, printed collateral, logos, music and writing, to name just a few. And of course, I also have a lot of customers for all my competitors who will try to steal from me as well. This is normal. If you are talented in any way, or in business of any kind, people steal from you.

What about copyright laws? Unless you want to spend a lot of money hiring a lawyer to chase down every thief and take them to court only to get a judgment against them that they will probably never pay, what’s the point? And that’s if you’re lucky. In most cases of Internet infringement, it is never even possible to locate the person responsible, let alone convict him of the crime. But it’s not money I’m looking for. If I were, why on earth would I write articles for internet article guides who don’t pay for the use of their articles? I write to such sites to get the benefit of backlinks to my site and blog. What are backlinks? They are an essential element of SEO (Search Engine Optimization) as links back to my site from popular, highly ranked sites contribute to my first page search results for my site when searching for appropriate keywords on Google. It’s complicated but it works.

Recently I was looking for some javascript code that I could use to do something clever on my website. When I found what I wanted to match, I checked what the terms of use were. The code writer has very humbly asked for just $5 if you would like to remove his name from the invisible credits that will only appear where other code seekers will see him. Otherwise, it was free. How can you not honor such a request? I happily left his name even though I had to spend many hours modifying the code to make it work in my situation but I felt a certain kinship with this skilled individual who engendered the utmost admiration and obedience. I treat others the way I want to be treated myself.

It was definitely disturbing when I first realized that my articles were being misused and posted as if they were written by someone on the site where I happened to find them. I checked the usage policy of the article sites to which I submitted my articles, which stated that it was required to publish articles with a signature line (ie, the author’s name) along with a link to the author’s website.

After reading this, I thought, “Oh, great! Maybe they’ll help me enforce their policies.” But upon further reading I quickly learned that it was My A responsibility to do any police work, to inform the criminals of what they so innocently ignored. Once such violations are brought to light, these well-intentioned advertisers will be eager to mend their ways. Ha! It’s a joke!

Not only do these abusive sites have no way to contact anyone, they are shrouded in secrecy by unknown hosts who ironically invite you to “report abuse”, only to inform you that they cannot accept responsibility for any wrongdoing by any blog site owner Single. If you want to try to post a comment to report the violation, you usually have to register and log in, revealing all your personal information, so that your comment will eventually be picked up by Google associated with a less than reputable site in a future search section that will accompany you to its grave. (Is this where we are headed, as members of the Google-dominated culture in which we live?)

When I was looking for the title of my article, and thus discovered the stolen uses, I saw something else that made me realize what a tangled web we weave on the Internet. One instance of my article used my title verbatim, but what followed in the body of the article was what appeared to be a broken, appalling English error translation from another language, suggesting that this article had come full circle. I imagined someone posting my English language article in Chinese, for example, and someone translating it back to English to use on the site where I found it. Let’s just say I was a little unhappy with the lack of attribution in this situation!

But it’s sad… a is very Sad state of affairs, wouldn’t you agree? Or is it, rather, “Wake up and smell the coffee! This is reality, so get over it”? Therefore, I resigned. As a person with shaky self-esteem to begin with, I accept someone pirating my work to call it their own the same way I accept someone cutting me off in traffic, or cutting in front of me in line at the grocery store. It has become so common that what else can you do but shrug it off? Sure, you can make a scene, but ironically in today’s society, you risk arrest for breaching the peace and causing a public disturbance. This would be a perfect example of today’s justice. No thanks. I’d rather just look the other way and be glad they don’t drag me out as the real criminal for posting interesting articles that tempt others to steal them.

But… just a minute! Isn’t this a site that listed my name as an author? And even a link to the picture and my website as well? Well, now. It’s not nice of anyone to be so kind! Funny how obeying the rules we’re all supposed to follow is the new, admirable supernatural usually reserved for the divine or immortal.

Are we so tired that the mere obedience to the law of the land has been elevated to an act of holiness, and worthy of the great reward granted only to humans? I guess it follows from this that telling the truth, showing respect, giving help and being fair are also beyond what is expected for normal people, and anyone who exhibits such behavior should be recognized as one of today’s superheroes. Never mind that many religions teach “thou shalt not steal”; In fact, growing up Catholic, I was taught not to even “covet” my neighbor’s goods, let alone go so far as to steal them. It was wrong to even “lust” over them, to use a term made famous (or should that be “infamous”?) by Jimmy Carter in an interview with Playboy back in 1976. And certainly in civil law, everyone knows it’s a punishment. insult to take something that doesn’t belong to you. But it is more than that. It not only takes it, but also gains glory from it! And in some cases, it even monetizes it because of advertising that appears as a result of its sellability and magnetic appeal, drawing cyber traffic to deliver the promised ad viewing. It should be under a more serious category and deserves an even greater punishment.

And if I were inclined to contact a copyright lawyer, I would inform my many rights in such a case. I will also be informed that I will be responsible for paying the lawyer who represented me, whether he managed to catch the culprit or not. Another case of divine justice gone awry. My rights are being violated and I am paying as a result. No pain, no gain, right? The pain is my shock and awe at being ripped off so blatantly; My outrage that someone else was impersonating me as the author; And my disgust at having to pay a lawyer to defend my rights. the profit? Obviously, everything is in the thief’s court, so to speak.
