Movie Review – Gulaal

And I thought Anurag Kashyap really excelled in Dev D, especially since tinkering with a proven classic can be a tricky proposition. He succeeded and above all! Hardly recovered from this amazing film AK has unleashed yet another explosion of emotions with a relentless assault on our sensibilities. Set in the feudal ethos of Rajasthan, the story is about the pursuit of ambition, gaining power, innocent and betrayed love. In a true Shakespearean setting there are plots and sub-plots and still some hidden beneath them, but each is linked together to finally merge in the climax so inevitable as a Greek tragedy.

Except Kay Kay Menon, almost everyone is a fresh face. The main leader Raja Singh Chaudhary is also the author of the story revolving around student politics which was rewritten by Anurag Kashyap and Aparna Chaturvedi after combining rebellious regional aspirations following the perceived injustices of the state. So contemporary and yet so well described! Kay Kay is the parochial manipulator who uses student politics to build a cadre to realize his outspoken agenda. Abhinayu Pratap Singh is the reclusive and reckless prince who tries to hide from his father’s wealth. Aditya Srivastava and Ayesha Mohan are the half-prince’s Machiavellian brothers whose longing for legitimacy drives them to fraud and murder. Deepak Dobrial is the main lightman of Kay Kay and Sixth Man. Mahi Gill in the role of Kay Kay’s lover impresses again with her vitality and natural acting ability. Jesse Randhawa’s ramp-to-screen walk shows a lot of promise.

I need to dedicate a separate paragraph to Piyush Mishra. The man has so far played few roles in various films and wrote the script for Black Friday, but in this picture he writes, he composes the music, sings and also acts. This will easily be one of the shows of the year if not the decade. First of all the music! Don’t forget the songs. to hear them; Hear the lyrics and you will be moved. While “Arambh hai prachand” sounds the battle cry, his rendition of “Duniya” which is a take on Pyaasa’s classic “Yeh Duniya Agar Mil Bhi Jaye To Kya hai” manages to maintain its integrity and freshness. The mojara song “Rana Ji” has to be one of the most original I’ve heard in a long time. Using traditional language and style, the lyrics go global without warning. So with Mahi Gill’s sexy thumka, you are suddenly presented with an in-your-face commentary on 9/11 (Jaise door desh ke tower main ghus jaye re aeroplane), Iraq, Afghanistan, democracy and the Coke Wars. Crazy imagination at its best! Another beautiful composition is “Sheher” sung along with the talented Swanand Kirkire (Remember Khoya Khoya Chand). Mishra plays the role of the schizophrenic musician, Kay Kay’s elder brother. He admires John Lennon, writes poetry on the spot and has an opinion on everything. The pathos on his face after he loses his dancing partner is heartbreaking.

I feel that Anurag Kashyap is not an ordinary filmmaker. His films are like a canvas where he tries to marry different art forms. If the music resounds with folk songs and fine singing, the shots of Ram Leela’s training characters lend theater as much as color. If one song reminds you of the wandering minstrels, the other carries the guitar strings of country western music. He is also a die-hard romantic. Look for the sketch of John Lennon peeking out of the Mad Poet Medallion and posters of Che Guevara and Jimi Hendrix in a neon-lit bar masquerading as a residence in the middle of the desert. For me it’s better than any art/parallel cinema.
