From the Editor – Creative Counseling – The Mozart Effect

University of Wisconsin researchers exposed lab rats to a little Mozart, according to a report published this summer. In what sounds like an undergraduate research project, rats raised in a nocturnal Mozart sound bath (Piano Sonata, K 448) learned to run mazes faster than genetically identical animals placed Philip Glass’ contemporary music or white noise. This work has potentially strong implications for education and enrichment programs, according to researchers who have previously studied the impact of Mozart’s music on college students and preschoolers. Some of this earlier work on what became known as the Mozart effect led to a small industry of authors and counselors trying to sell ambitious publications about the benefits of exposing their children or even the maze-running ability of Mozart-fed rats seems far from Christian counseling. But other researchers are examining the effect of music on spatial thinking and the cognitive abilities involved in fields as diverse as mathematics, architecture, visual arts and stress management I don’t need research like this to convince me that music has a calming effect on my life. A few years ago I became interested in environmental psychology and read everything I could find about the positive and negative impact of noise, color, nature, even rain. yachts and interior design. These external influences do not solve problems, but they play a powerful role in creating or reducing stress, influencing our worship, and complementing our counsel.

Keeping creativity in perspective: I am among those counselors who are energized by the prospect of using music and other forms of art to enrich our counseling. The Mozart effect and its consequences fascinate me. I am inspired and motivated by creativity, challenge and change. It’s exciting for me to think of innovative ways to make Christian counseling more effective and relevant to the churches and clients we work with. But this kind of enthusiasm about creativity should be tempered by some conclusions. First, creativity is individualistic. Some people are less creative than others. They work best within set parameters. They don’t respond well to challenges from people like me who proclaim the value of creating new boundaries or responding to managed care by finding creative new ways to help. Creativity is not for everyone.

Second, creative approaches to counseling are not always necessary and are always helpful. Innovation for the sake of innovation can lead us to abandon established procedures and alternative techniques that may be new and different but unproven. Some counseling methods have worked great over the years. It is worth keeping them because they have been proven to be valid and effective. Third, creative approaches to counseling must be subjected to rigorous biblical and scientific evaluation. Almost anything we might do in counseling even some of the crazy treatments that grab the headlines will help some people some of the time, if the therapist is passionate, empathetic and a good salesman. But declarations of success combined with a few case studies do not provide sufficient proof of the effectiveness of new or creative methods. Counselors, in general, and Christian counselors, in particular, have been quick to promote their methods, but very slow to evaluate their practices carefully, systematically, and (for the Christian) biblically. Creativity in counseling without careful evaluation can be catastrophic.

These days the professional literature on counseling is full of new age theories and techniques. When we read about creative methods, we must not jump on board and assume that what is new and innovative is automatically better. Instead, we can be open to new and creative ideas, encourage the creative people who are trying to create new consulting frontiers, but be careful not to be too quick to adopt methods that are unproven and may not be effective. Find a therapist to get a solution to your problems.
