Benefits of Social Dancing

Ballroom dancing is a wonderful activity that benefits people of all ages. Whether it’s ballroom, salsa, swing, tango, mayhem… there are many benefits to incorporating dance into your daily life, including fitness, emotional health, social health and mental health benefits.

1) Dancing is great Fitness activity. Dancing is an excellent cardiovascular exercise that utilizes many major muscle groups, and encourages proper posture and skeletal alignment. Flexibility, agility and core strength have also greatly improved. Dancing is a fun activity, so you won’t be looking at your watch or pedometer to see how hard you’ve worked. In fact, you’ll notice that sometimes time goes by so fast that you wish the dance class or social night was longer sometimes. Which means you’ll be “working out” more than you might at the gym.

2) Dancing will improve yours emotional health. Social dancing not only requires coordination and rhythm, it requires you to move with another person (your partner) through Leading & Following, thereby greatly stimulating the neurological pathways. There are many studies that find that dancing helps reduce stress and also increases serotonin levels. I really felt the impact of this the other day myself. I was stressed and frustrated with some personal matters all morning and afternoon, but after teaching salsa for two hours and then practicing the foxtrot and quickstep with a friend for another hour, I felt much better emotionally, slept well, woke up the next morning full of energy and was motivated and excited for the day ahead.

3) Dancing is great Social Action. As the name suggests, social dancing is meant to be “social”. Whether it’s basket ball, salsa, swing, tango, hustle… in dance classes or social dance sessions, these dances require you to collaborate with someone else, so you get to know one other person. By going to social dance classes and social dance events, you will meet people of both sexes with a common interest – dance – and by doing so you will meet new friends and acquaintances. If you are new and shy, try group dance lessons first. You won’t have the pressure of asking someone to dance and in most dance classes you have a partner to spin with throughout the class.

4) Dancing makes you smarter. Dance integrates several brain functions at the same time, therefore improving connectivity. There were studies that found that dancing also helps prevent Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Simply put, dance requires you to use your brain in a different way than your everyday life, thereby stimulating and creating new neurological pathways. I recently had the opportunity to teach Ballroom & Swing to adults with Parkinson’s disease. It was definitely a groundbreaking experience. Once these individuals got into a dance position (holding hands with each other) and started dancing to the music, it was as if they had no such illness – the awkward tremors and tension were almost non-existent when they danced, and not only did they develop the same muscle memory of dance patterns, exactly Like any of my regular students by consistent practice

so what now? Well, there are dance studios and ballrooms all over the country in most cities, with many wonderful dance instructors teaching group dance classes. So maybe start there. I enjoy dancing all the partner dances and most ballroom dance studios provide instruction in over 20 styles of ballroom dancing**, but if you don’t click with a dance, that’s fine, try another dance. Just like we all have different tastes in music, it’s the same with dance. If you like big band music, try swinging. If you like the Latin sounds, try salsa or rumba. If you like the blues, try the Foxtrot. Also, remember that once you learn one dance well, it will be easier to learn another, so don’t feel like you have to do everything at once.

I must mention at the end, the benefits of dancing feel obvious immediately for some people, but may take some time to feel for others. Developing good social dancing skills will definitely take some time as well. However, I will promise you that if you consistently follow the dance, you will improve and it will become fun.
