For the Love of Organizing: Simple Organizing Tips to Keep You Sane From Home to Office

I was asked again and again: “How is it that you are so tidy?” Well, I’ll share my secret with you.

Organization is an expectation.

When we spend time looking ahead – anticipating in advance – we prepare and execute more effectively. By looking ahead, you’ll create more time for yourself and have less stress.

Before I set out to do anything, whether it’s putting together a grocery list to plan meals for the week, packing for a trip, or just tackling the daily commute to my home office, I anticipate.

I spend at least an hour or two a week anticipating. So here’s my advice to you: take an hour, let’s say on Sunday mornings, and sit down with your favorite organizational tool: pen and paper, laptop, iPad, or your calendar with today’s timer.

Anticipation involves looking ahead

Take a hard look at the week ahead – even the month ahead. (We’ll just deal with the week here). Ask yourself: what is going on? what I need?

As you look ahead to the week ahead, you create your to-do list for the week. Although everyone’s life is different, I offer a few things to think about. The goal is to imagine the week ahead, anticipate it and prepare for it. You can even take it one step further and imagine everything going smoothly.

Yes, your life is unique, but you still need to be organized no matter what. For example, you may not have children, but you have other family members or friends who make large demands on your time and energy. While I make suggestions based on someone like me—a working mom—my advice can be adapted to anyone who wants to get organized and stay organized, no matter what their specific life situation.

Start with food

We all need to eat. Much of our stress—especially among working women—involves getting home and having to have a meal ready and ready to eat in 30 minutes or less. Try starting your to-do list like this:

– Plan what you are going to eat for the week.

– Make a grocery list, shop and then prepare as many meals as possible ahead of time on Sunday.

(You can also categorize your grocery list by department—produce, meat, dairy, dry goods, and so on—to make your shopping trip quick and efficient.) While there are some wonderful grocery list tools online, I’m old school and just use a notepad. Take your list, shop, then come back and start cooking. This job will save you a lot of time during the week when you really need it. Once Monday starts, it’s go go go, but you’ll be fine because you’ll know exactly what to feed yourself and your family.

Never underestimate the power of the list. Yes, we all make lists, shop and save for things, but this is the last part you must do to reduce stress: you must now prepare your food and cook.

Look beyond the food

Then, continue to look at your week. what should you do for example:

Should appointments be scheduled or cancelled?

Do you have all the equipment ready for your children’s sports?

do you have laundry to do (I like to do mine on Sunday while I cook).

Are your clothes chosen for events, work and play?

Did your car run out of gas?

Do you have the necessary materials prepared or written reports?

Are you ready for any meeting?

Are training sessions scheduled on your calendar?

Do you have a babysitter where needed?

Do you need to schedule time for the home office?

Have you set a time for “me”?

This is a needs-based list that helps you create your daily to-do list. Apply the needs to the days of the week, as needed. Monday mornings are best used to set up your week, make calls, get ready and head out. Here’s a very important tip: don’t touch your email just yet.

Never start Monday morning dealing with emails; This will be the death of your plan. Always tackle your to-do list first (which might include sending emails, but don’t read or respond to your inbox yet). It shouldn’t take more than an hour, and then you’re off to the races with email, Facebook, Twitter, or whatever Other you need or want to do.

What’s up with your kids?

Consider not only what you need to prepare for, but also what activities, sports or events your children have.

This is where most of your time may be spent – managing their activities, which become yours – therefore, you should expect them as well.

I find that having a bag of some sort for each activity saves time and stress looking for things. Keep separate bags for dance, skating and hockey, and others for school, music, art, etc. By compartmentalizing each activity, you organize it and can see what you need or need to do for it.

Make work less work

And then there is work. There’s always work, it seems! But is there anything else you need to do that is work-related?

If it is a report that is required, or meetings to prepare, have you scheduled it in your calendar? Your diary is your manager, so keep it full but also free. By time off, I mean leaving some free time to breathe and prepare.

The power of watching

Remember, by spending time looking ahead—anticipating—we envision a well-prepared, smooth, and efficient life. By looking forward, you’ll find more time for yourself – less stressful time.

As a final piece of advice, go with the flow. You’ve heard it before: don’t sweat the small stuff. As sticky as I am and listen to my own advice, I know the unexpected will happen, but I don’t let it ruffle my feathers. Once you get organized and stay organized, you will be organized – and nothing will bother you.
