Hooks to Hits: The Key to Writing Songs That Sell

The main ingredient that differentiates a perfectly respectable “album cut” from a hit song is the presence of Killer Hook. But if hooks like this were so easy to make, we’d all be millionaires! How can you improve the hooks effect of your songs to appeal to both the audience and the people behind the desks? Keep reading!

To make this article more useful, collect your 3 most powerful or recent titles, titles, or chants so you can apply what we discuss to the “real world” of your material.

Tap into your personal experiences for “nuggets of truth”

I believe the old saying “write what you know” applies to writing poetry as well as prose. Although some of us prefer to believe that we can write about anyone and anything, our most meaningful and successful songs usually come from “real life” experiences, and our reactions to those experiences, and interpretations of them. Every day we spend on the planet, viewed through the prism of songwriting, offers countless creative possibilities. The seeds of brilliant poems are often just below the surface, but the writer must be willing to nurture their growth.

Let’s say you start with a blank slate: a germ of an idea brewing, a recording device turned on and an instrument, a voice or a blank page ready and waiting. How will you manage to extract the proverbial killer hook from your precious “nuggets of truth”:

o First, ask: What is true, real, powerfully felt right now in your life? Be attentive to those flashes of realization, the moments of “Aha!” your.

o What experiences do you have a burning desire to share?

o What contribution do you want to make to the world?

o What makes your angle on life unique, compelling, interesting?

o In the movie “Walk The Line”, Sam Phillips asks Johnny Cash what song he would sing if he was dying in a ditch on the side of the road and only had 3 minutes left. What hook would you sing in that situation?

o How can you arrange words and/or musical notes to bring down your “soul” in a song?

o Go crazy, be bold, reveal your deepest truth or your silliest idea.

o Your role as a songwriter is to express what others cannot express. Exaggerate!

Now take a few minutes and blurt out what comes to your mind. Really dig in there and fearlessly sing, write or play anything, anything, as long as it’s true. This is a great exercise to try whenever you have 10 minutes to spare.

Then, start putting that spark of inspiration into song form. Stay connected with the essence of your personal experience as you begin to experiment with words and music.

Ways to improve the impact of your song hooks

In verse/chorus song form – the most common form these days – the chorus, and especially the hook, is where you “deliver the goods”. It’s the equivalent of summing up before the jury, the joke’s punchline, the revelation on the mountaintop. Every verse, every chorus, every bridge, every line and every note leads to this ultimate payoff. A great hook (and chorus) full of meaning, fun, passionate intensity… or all three! It cannot be overemphasized that your hook should truly rock the world. But first, it needs to rock yours. That should ring true for you.

o Boil your big idea down to the smallest possible expression of its essence: your hook.

o Stay simple yet elegant. Less is usually more.

o Do not walk around with the glass. was bold and dangerous. Always take a strong point of view!

o A great line bears repeating. If it’s worth saying, it’s usually worth saying again.

o Make your song move rhythmically. People want to be moved by your song in more ways than one.

o Think of it this way: your hook is the center of the wheel, and the rest of the song’s elements are the spokes.

o Add your melody to your lyrics so that each one strengthens and deepens the other.

o If you’re excited about your hook, “they” probably will be too. And if you hold back, they probably will too!

o Show your “money” note, your most salami groove, your smartest line, your most unusual hook concept. Aim for the podium, emotionally and creatively.

Give your hooks to mass appeal

Singles differ from album cuts in catchiness, accessibility and freshness. And the hook is the key to this mass appeal. Most listeners and people behind the tables couldn’t sing you all the verses of the song if they tried. But most can remember a killer hook or chorus. For those of you driven by thoughts of financial gain, singles is also where the money is. (But remember: selling out doesn’t mean selling out!) When you get to your main hook, hit us with fresh language, chords, and melodic movement to wake us up physically, emotionally, and spiritually. The meaning may be:

o A passionate lyrical title or line: a twist of phrase, an unforgettable image, or an emotional outpouring that rings true

o A peak moment for the singer. It could be a high note, a long note, a rhythmically cool beat or movement, a fresh interval, a repeating pattern or melodic sequence, etc.

o A catchy instrumental riff or chordal pattern

o A basic rhythm or groove that sweeps everything in its path

o Enough repetition to be catchy without being boring

o A striking contrast to everything that comes before and after (verses, choruses, bridge), so that your hook stands out clearly

Remember, more Hooks-Per-Square-Inch is better! In this age of sensory overload, listeners thrive on intense songs that cut through the clutter. We want to be excited on all levels. We are hungry for depth, truth, emotion, humor. Strive to discover the universal within the personality, the specifics of real life. Make your poem paint a picture or create an environment where people can live.

By following these guidelines, and learning from songs that are hits in your chosen genres, you can make your songs more accessible, satisfying and commercially viable.

Songwriting is fun!
