Performing All Vocal Styles With Expertise And Confidence Is Critical To Your Resume As A Vocalist

During my tenure as a voice instructor, I coached singers, speakers and actors of every age and musical in every speaking style. Some typical singing styles would be, classical, opera, musical theater, jazz, pop, folk, rock, rhythm and blues and country. Some typical speaking styles would be, corporate trainer, corporate speaker, politician, teacher, poet or rap artist. Some typical acting styles would be, stage actor, musical theatre, film actor, commercial actor, voice over or creating specific characters or accents. If I missed, please add them to the list.

My point is that there are so many uses for the human voice, an amazing miracle of an instrument. Having worked with all of these people over the years, I have found these consistent themes in how they perceive their chosen method and/or style.

1) They often worship their chosen style and exclude all others. (This is especially common with a snooty academic/classical crowd)

2) They think their singing style is the only correct way the voice can act.

3) They have little or no understanding of how the voice works.

4) They think they are gifted and don’t need gifted training.

5) They refuse to even consider expanding their abilities by trying to sing or speak in a different style.

To me, anyone who thinks in any such fashion is incredibly naive and has little or no interest in being a talented singer. If I ruffled your virginity feathers, I don’t apologize.

Before you leave the room or call your lawyer claiming I’ve bruised your ego, please allow me one chance to explain to you the many aspects of proper vocal performance that are common to all vocal styles. We will then discuss the few actual differences. Here is a list of all aspects of vocal performance that must be understood and practiced by all vocalists and all styles of playing or speaking.

1) How to breathe correctly to consume the maximum amount of oxygen every time we breathe.

2) Understand how the body is designed to use oxygen under pressure to perform many vital functions by coordinating the abdominal muscles.

3) There is a deep understanding of the most important abdominal muscle for singing or speaking called the diaphragm. This includes its location in the body, how it is used to consume oxygen and how it is used to pressurize airflow and expel it in a controlled and efficient manner.

4) A thorough understanding of the larynx or vocal cords and how to use this wonderful organ to achieve basic sound and correct pitch.

5) How to keep our throat open so that the basic sound and pitch that emanates from the throat is not limited and therefore will be reduced in every way before it reaches the resonance chambers of the head.

Before we discuss how stylistic differences are created, please review the above long list of important things that all singers must be able to understand and perform masterfully before they can be a strong vocalist in any style.

Now let’s discuss how we achieve different styles. You will be surprised how simple it really is. And when you understand this, my hope is that you will become a singer who understands that there are more common processes than different ones. And hopefully, you’ll be more open to becoming an accomplished singer or speaker in all styles.

Let’s start with the style in which the voice usually works to its full potential. It will be classical or opera. I realized I made a not-so-flattering comment on #1 of my first set of numbered items. (This is especially common with a snooty academic/classical crowd) I didn’t make that comment about the style; I made this comment about some of the people who perform this style. The college where I received my formal music degree was a place where the mention of popular music was considered blasphemy. When my childhood musical background was Surf Bands and Rock And Roll, I had to watch what I said for fear of being tarred and feathered!

We will analyze the physical singing style of classical or opera. We usually see the following physical characteristics in the performer.

1) They often breathe correctly.

2) They often figure out how to use their abdominal muscles for proper oxygen control.

3) Their diction is often clear and resonant.

4) Often their jaw is open or dropped to produce the most balanced resonant tone possible.

In my experience, I rarely find the important aspects of vocal performance in people who sing in other styles. The main reason is lack of training but another reason is a bad attitude about openness to singing in other styles.

Unfortunately, human nature seems to be to dismiss a new challenge or even minimize its importance instead of embracing it as a gift that will change our lives. We prefer to shoot the messenger than to listen, embrace and grow. Pretty sad!

What I have found is that once I can get a student through the mental blocks of trying out a new vocal style, it becomes mostly a matter of changing the diction and opening the jaw to different positions that create fundamental changes in musical or speech style. It really is that simple.

I want you all to try something so you can get the effect. I want you to act in character using two ends. Choose any song or speech you know and perform it in each of the following characters. Don’t hold back and make the most exaggerated figure possible.

1) Pretend you’re an opera singer or speaking words in a Shakespeare play.

2) Pretend you’re a seasoned country singer with all the twang you can muster. If you speak, just say the words like that.

As you do this, note the following:

1) How open or closed your throat is.

2) Your tongue position at all times.

3) How closed or how open your jaw is.

4) What kind of tone, nasal or balanced, do you produce?

5) Do you feel tension in your neck and head or not.

I hope you get the picture that the differences in vocal performance are very few compared to the similarities. When you tell your body to become a certain character, the subconscious brings it into action by changing physical positions.

In conclusion, I tell all my students that if they really want to be an accomplished and accomplished vocalist, they need to be able to sing or speak in any style on command and do it properly.

So, it’s time to let go of the ego and open up to getting some proper training. Trust me, when you do this, you will be a very happy vocalist. Furthermore, you will have a healthy respect for all styles, for all vocalists and an increased admiration for your wonderful instrument.

greetings,

Jonathan Morgan Jenkins
