The Legend of Masamune Sword Smith

Just as in music there are classics such as Bach and Beethoven, Japanese sword making has several names associated with exquisite perfection and artistry. Masamune is definitely one of them. His swords are famous for their quality and originality and are considered an example of the fine art of sword making. What is most amazing is that in the 13th century there were no sophisticated smithing tools and the steel used to make swords was usually impure. However, many sword makers today cannot compete with Masamune swords when it comes to elegance, nie (martensian crystals in ferrite) and most importantly – quality.

At that time Japan was threatened by the Mongols so the swordsmiths were quite busy. A sword in the hands of one samurai capable of killing ten thousand Mongols and beautiful enough to wear proudly – that was the main requirement of samurai who ordered swords and Masson was the best at it.

There aren’t many swords signed by Masamune. You may have heard of some of them, such as “Daikoku Masamune” or “Fudo Masamune”. All of Masamune’s swords, 50 of which have survived to this day, are legally certified as the property of the State of Japan or Imperial Royalty. That’s why you can only see them at exhibitions or sword shows. So the next time you see an advertisement for such an exhibition with the name Masamune, don’t think twice and go for it – you may not get another chance to see the Masamune sword.

Guru Nyudo is the historical name of Masamune. Historians believe he lived and worked in Sagami Prefecture during the years 1328-1288, being taught by famous swordsmen such as Kunimitsu and Kunitsuna. After working with them Masamune learned their techniques and developed them and created the Soshu school of sword making. There is a legend about Masamune’s jittetsu (followers/disciples). They were 10 years old, as said, and they were learning the art of sword making, when Masamune applied their ideas and methods to forge blades. It was probably one of the first workshops in which not only beginners participated, but also experienced and well-known swordsmiths.

During the 13th century Japanese samurai expected a weapon to be functional and beautiful at the same time, so Masamune just like other swords of the time had to perform this rather difficult task. Besides their quality and elegance, Masamune swords are famous for their unique construction. Nie represents areas of crystalline luster structure embedded in a temper line (mass) or part of the blade between its ridge line and the temper line (ji). It is the result of interaction with steel during the conversion process. In general, the heated blade was covered with layers of clay of different thickness and used in molds followed by quenching with cold water. The color contrast of the metal increased with different cooling time and formed light gray swirling patterns. When you look at them, the first association that comes to your mind is moving clouds. This is one of the main features that distinguish Masamune swords and make them almost perfect.

Masamune swords have the largest number of references in the catalog of “Japanese Swords of All Time” (Kyoho Meibutsu Cho). His swords were believed to contain spiritual powers and there are many stories that said only people with a pure soul were able to wield them.
