Film Noir Influence in The Virgin Suicides

Teen suicide was not unheard of before the 1990s, but its increasing incidence during this period brought people to recognize the problem. Schools even began publishing materials to educate students and parents about the phenomena. The Virgin Suicides tackles this delicate subject head-on. Sofia Coppola combines elements of her own style with those of classic film noir to show how these young people become so alienated in a world they barely know or understand. Through the eyes of five sheltered teenage girls, Coppola opens up a dark universe of isolation.

From the beginning of the film, it is known that the five Lisbon girls all died before reaching adulthood. A small group of boys, now men, from the neighborhood of Lisbon never forgot the mysterious sisters who never fully understood them. One of the men narrates the film and informs the viewer that he and his friends still gather at every high school reunion and birthday party to discuss the fate of the Lisbon girls.

The film then flashes back to their childhood circa 1975, showing the girls getting out of their family’s station wagon. Cecilia is the youngest at 13, preceded by Lux, Bonnie, Mary and Therese who were all one year older. All the girls look so young, innocent and beautiful. However, it is soon revealed that Cecilia has just been released from the hospital after a suicide attempt.

Cecilia starts seeing a therapist who advises the strict people of Lisbon to allow their daughters to have a party to encourage the girls and allow them to interact with boys and girls their own age. Cecilia is upset by a group of her peers making fun of a boy with Down syndrome. She feels that she too will never really belong in society, so she runs upstairs and jumps out of her window. Her second suicide attempt is successful since she lands on a wrought iron fence. The rest of the film is about the Lisbon couple’s struggle to cope with this new reality. Eventually, the remaining sisters decide that Cecilia was right about the world being a bleak and lonely place where existence itself is futile, so they decide to join her by taking their own lives.

Even though The Virgin Suicides It is by no means a classic film noir, there is no denying that Coppola was influenced by the ideas it brings to mind. The mood of some scenes, for example, has parallels to that of film noir. After all, Coppola intends to bring the audience into the strange and heavy world in which these doomed girls live. Both the suicide scenes and the scene where Tripp leaves Lux in the middle of the football field after having sex with her evoke a feeling of unrest and inconceivable that definitely characterizes the film noir. The Virgin Suicides Also influenced by noir and style. The film is mainly about these teenage girls who feel separated from the crowd, trapped in the half-reality that was their home. Everything at home in Lisbon is drab and gray. There is never direct sunlight, or strong lighting indoors in Lisbon. It’s like the girls are covered in cobwebs like little porcelain dolls kept in a basement somewhere. Coppola uses light throughout the film to symbolize life and change, such as the cuts to exterior time-lapse shots with the sun shining in the background. It also shows that things outside are changing, but the Lisbon girls are forced to remain standing in their rooms.

The Virgin Suicides Also boasts an especially edgy score for the time period it’s meant to represent. Track titles include “Graveyard Party”, “Dirty Trip” and “Bathroom Girl”. These are songs that Mrs. Lisbon would certainly not allow her children to listen to. Coppola even makes sure of this by showing Lux burning all her rock CDs at the hands of her mother. This represents the authority the girls’ parents still have over their lives, but the score that still plays throughout the film represents their struggle to make a place for themselves. Maybe the girls were successful and they just suffocate. However, it is more likely that the girls saw no hope of living in a future that they saw as lonely, awkward and unsatisfying.

The Virgin Suicides He also comes out of the noir, and notices the more modern film conventions. Lux Lisbon is not the classic femme fatale of film noir. She knows her sexual attraction and that she can use it to her advantage, yet she doesn’t try to cheat the men she sleeps with. Lux is just trying to justify what happened with Tripp. She had sex with him after the homecoming dance because she thought he cared about her, and then he just left her sleeping on the football field. Lux, being only fifteen years old, was greatly influenced by this. She then responds by trying to prove to herself that sex means nothing. So it would be fine if she lost her virginity to a trip for no good reason.

The story of the unfortunate Lisbon sisters had to be told in a modern context, while the world they live in and the experiences they have are sometimes enlightening. Therefore, a real infusion of several different styles and genres was required. Sofia Coppola does a wonderful job of combining film noir conventions with her own thematic style in the direction of The Virgin Suicides. The music and lighting of the film are similar to noir, as is the general theme of the film which is the setting where days merge together and even sex is meaningless. However, neither sister really resembles a classic femme fatale. Also, the boys may be like junior detectives, but they have no hidden or ulterior motives. Their respect and wonder for the Lisbon sisters is sincere, which is something that cannot exist in film noir.
