Beginners Piano and Keyboard Song Lesson – How To Play Annie’s Song

Annie’s Song was made famous by John Denver in 1974. It is a classic love song which was written about his wife.

The song is very simple and perfect for a beginner to keyboard or piano. It has a beautiful melody and lyric line which has reached out to many people.

Annie’s Song itself is quite a short piece of music but it repeats a couple of times which also makes it a great song to begin your musical journey with as there isn’t too much content.

The original song was written in D Major, but for a beginner playing it a tone down in C Major makes it a lot easier as it doesn’t require any black notes and as it is only one step down from its original key it doesn’t make much difference to the songs melody.

If you want to try your hand at the melody line of the song using your right hand, then below is the fingering and notes to do so: –

5 5 4 3 5 4 3 3 3 4 5 2 1

C C B A C B A A A B C G E

2 2 2 3 4 5 4 3 3 3 4 5 4

G G G A B C B A A A B C B

5 5 4 3 5 4 3 3 3 4 5 2 1

C C B A C B A A A B C G E

2 2 3 4 5 4 3 4 5 5 4

G G A B C B A B C D C

If you would rather learn it so you can accompany a singer or yourself singing then the chords required to play in your right hand would be as follows: –

F MAJOR – The notes are F A C

G MAJOR – The notes are G B D

C MAJOR – The notes are C E G

A MINOR – The notes are A C E.

If you are playing chords in your right hand try then to use the following fingering:

1 (Being your thumb) 3 & 5 alternatively use 1 2 4.

When learning any piece of music it is important to use the fingering guide advised in your book or what your video tutorial suggests.

If you get into bad habits of using just a couple of fingers then your music will sound messy because you will keep tripping up and running out of fingers, so where possible make use of all your fingers.
