Hidden Gems From The Kinks Discography
In a recording career spanning over 30 years, The Kinks have amassed an extensive record catalog. 24 studio albums, 6 of his EPs, 78 singles, and a ton of live albums and compilations.
Most people are familiar with their biggest hits and most famous albums, but the Kinks’ discography is full of lesser-known hidden gems.
Among these hidden gems, I will introduce one album and one single that I have selected.
Album – Phobias
The Kinks’ final studio album was released in 1993. It didn’t chart in the UK and in the US she was only number 166. I think it’s a farce because not only is this my personal favorite Kinks album, but I think it’s about as great a rock album as you’ve ever heard. In some regions, it features over 16 tracks, including a 17th bonus track, Did Ya. If you’re not familiar with it, he’s one of the greatest albums you can swear is a package of hits. There are many great songs. Wall Of Fire, Drift Away, Still Searching, Over The Edge, The Informer, Hatred – they were all good enough for singles. As it was, Scattered (UK/Europe only) and Only A Dream (UK only) were singles. Scattered was a really great record.
Single – Sweet Lady Genevieve
This track from the Preservation Act 1 album was only released in the UK in 1973. A beautifully uplifting ballad with a strong 4/4 beat, but with plenty of her 2/4 bars inserted. It’s the song of a wanderer, longing for lost love. My favorite line is from the first verse:-
“I once told an endless lie under a scarlet sky.
But those were the words of a drunken wanderer
Who knew he would break your heart before long
Oh, forgive me, Genevieve.”

There are many other hidden gems in The Kinks’ catalog, and you may have your own favorites, but if you take my recommendations, they should, despite their lack of “hit status,” I am sure you will agree that both are very good records. .
