What Are Head, Chest, and Middle Voice, Really?

introduction

“If you want to chat with me, set your terms.” – Voltaire

We need to get on the same page. There are too many pages. There are far too many gimmicks, tricks and tips said and written by people who don’t share the same terminology. This causes problems, misunderstandings and arguments.

If we turn to science, we can find ways to describe things so clearly that guesses and opinions collapse under the weight of demonstrable truths. From the myths came the turmoil and I wish we would make the distinction between reality and seek agreement because the truth frees us from the past.

The common names of voice recordings:

Chest sound

Medium low voice

Medium high voice

head voice

Super head voice

Chest Voice got its name as a result of singers feeling a sympathetic vibration in their chest when singing in the lowest part of their voice. The chest voice is not actually a sound, per se, but is a register. The size of the sound waves is such that, at the lowest register, the chest vibrates.

A low middle voice is just above the chest voice. It should blend in with the chest voice and may sound exactly the same, except that it is at a higher pitch, above the true chest voice.

A high middle voice is below a head voice, but it is above a low middle voice. Some prominent vocal coaches do not differentiate between low mid and high mid and call it all the same. Some prominent vocal coaches call the middle voice Mix or Mix Voice or Mixed Voice. This is misleading in that it sounds as if a singer could or would mix two singing hamsters and that is not what happens, as is easily demonstrated when you observe the vocal folds as a singer slides from chest to low mid to high mid to head. . You don’t have a magic blender or food processor in your neck that blends sounds in some imaginary way. The middle voice registers, low and high, are not a combination of head voice and chest voice. They are among these registers.

Head Voice got its name because singers noticed that they could feel vibrations in their heads when they sang higher than where they normally speak.

Super Head Voice is above Head Voice. It’s also called whistle-blowing, but it’s not a whistle. Some call a super head sound a flageolet, which is an actual “mechanical” whistle.

In summary, vocal registers are the ranges of the voice, but they are not properties of sound or tone. There are singers and vocal coaches who don’t know this and they talk about registers as if they were a specific tone quality or timbre. The leading music schools, conservatories and universities are precise and explicit and do not interchange or misuse terminology. This is a great time for you all to get on the same page. By doing this we can gain a deeper understanding of the structure and function of poetry. Maybe we can even get along.

Sound, tone and tone

Sound travels at about 750 miles per hour. We have no valves, as such, within our heads to enable us to direct the sound or place the sound to any considerable degree. We also do not have muscles that expand the pharyngeal cavity and therefore cannot actually “open the throat” or “keep the throat open”. Do not blame me. I did not design or build the human body.

When the vocal folds are in close proximity, when air is expelled through them, we will have a sound called a full voice. A full voice is the sound we make in which we can “radiate” or have power or strength. Many singers and some vocal coaches refer to a full voice as a chest voice but these terms are precise and not interchangeable. The chest voice is an impression and a full voice is a sound. Registration will be precise notes in your vocal production. You may notice that they vary slightly up or down on any given day, but not much. Do not read in a full chest voice. You can sing full voice in every single register. When you do this, you don’t stretch your chest voice higher. This is a common fallacy. You can yell or scream and do something called a chest pull sound, but that’s yelling, not singing, and can damage the vocal folds.

You cannot sing out loud with a breathy sound and you may even feel pain if you try to do so. The production of breathy sounds is achieved by the vocal folds being insufficient to produce the full voice. As a result, the air escapes and we can hear this in combination with the tone of the vibrating vocal folds. A breathy sound can be called a sound characteristic, or tone.

What are the vocal cords? Vocal chords only exist when there are three singers singing together in three different tones. Some vocal trainers have referred to the vocal cords, but mean the vocal cords. Doctors usually don’t say vocal cords, because they are not cords and definitely not “cords”.

Video stroboscopy revealed that the vibrational action of the vocal folds is quite complex. Using a microphone that allows measurement of the frequency vibration and combining this with a strobe light allowed doctors and speech therapists to visually observe the function and structure of the actual voice as it is in action. Videos of this can be found online.

You can think of a full voice as a solid sound and a breathy voice that has air in it.

Remember this: “If you want to chat with me, set your terms.” – Voltaire

So, I hope there was some clarification in the definition of the terms, based on modern science, not myths.
