5 Things to Do During Summer in Barcelona
Regardless of the season, the city of Barcelona has no shortage of activities to enjoy. However, the Mediterranean sun in the summer months seems to amplify these options, offering visitors an almost overwhelming variety of places to visit and tours to take. For this reason, we have taken the time to highlight what we believe to be some of the most memorable things to do in the Catalan capital during the hottest season of the year. From picnics to nightlife and everything in between, here’s your guide to the five best things to do in Barcelona this summer:
get to the beach
When the city is at its hottest, one of the best ways to embrace the sun is to go to the nearest beach. Luckily for visitors to Barcelona, the “closest beach” is actually a 4.5km stretch of beach that is home to more than 7 different beaches.
For adventure seekers looking for a lively experience, check out Barcelonta Beach, the most popular and active “playa” in town. During the day, Barcelona is a great area for visitors interested in participating in beach sports such as volleyball and there is plenty of room to relax in the sun.
Located in the center of Barcelona’s nightlife strip, Barcelonta is a short walk from many famous bars and clubs which during the day become relaxing places to enjoy a drink – on the beach. Moreover, there are plenty of typical “chiringitos” (beach bars) located right on the sand like Princesa 23, perfect for a chilled cocktail or two.
If you prefer a more calm and peaceful environment on the beach, we suggest heading to Nova Mar Bella beach. Here you will be among a more relaxed crowd, most likely you will relax and maybe take a quick siesta on the sand. When all the beach activity makes you hungry, we recommend you stop at one of the many beach restaurants, excellent places that offer all the ingredients of an extraordinary dining experience: fresh seafood, paella, a cold drink and an amazing view of the Mediterranean Sea.
Summer nights in Barcelona
When it comes to Barcelona, you can only experience half of the city’s amazing activities unless you’re willing to delay your bedtime a bit. Known for its wild nightlife, Barcelona is the place to be for some hot summer tunes and a fun night on the town.
A night out in Barcelona would not be complete without a stop at Port Olympic. This short strip is located just steps from the beach and is home to some of Barcelona’s most popular “discotheques”, such as Opium Mar and Choco. Be sure to bring some comfortable dancing shoes, however, because at these clubs the party doesn’t stop until the wee hours of the morning.
For a more culturally diverse night scene, why not check out some of Barcelona’s traditional bar spots? Although it’s harder to choose from the more rambling bars and clubs, local bars in Barcelona are the ideal place to sample authentic Spanish tapas, quality cocktails and friendly culture. Why not try a blast from past experience at Small (Comtessa de Sobradiel 9). This well-hidden vintage spot offers its guests some exceptional cocktails at affordable prices.
Delicious treats to beat the heat
When you’re feeling clean during your summer stay in Barcelona and you’ve had your fill of traditional paella and tapas, there’s really only one decision to make: a glass or a cone.
Wander through any street in the greater Barcelona area and it won’t be long before you come across one of the city’s many gelaterias, such as the Italian “Amorino” which has many ice cream parlors scattered in the city center, or the “strange” Eyescream and Friends”, located near the beach in Passeig De Juan de Borbo This sweet frozen treat is the ideal snack for any Barcelona traveler looking to cool off.
A picnic in the park
In order to scratch two things off your list at once, we suggest a quirky picnic with friends and family while taking in the spectacular view of Barcelona from the beautiful Park Guell. This architectural masterpiece designed by Barcelona’s most prominent artistic mind, Antonio Gaudi, is one of the city’s must-see attractions. Park Güell embodies Gaudi’s love of color, as walls, fountains and even benches are covered in vibrant tiles. Additionally, his use of unusual shapes and unconventional designs is sure to awaken the child in all of us. So take a few hours out of your day to head out to this beautiful area and enjoy lunch while looking out over the city.
festivals and celebrations
Barcelona, widely known for its cultural pride and appreciation, gathers several times throughout the year to celebrate various holidays, religious and otherwise. However, those who visit in the summer months are lucky enough to experience the city during the time of year when some of the best and most exciting festivals take place.
One of the biggest and most popular festivals in the city of Barcelona is the Festa Major de Gràcia. This huge street party takes place in the Gràcia district for the entire week of August 15th. During this week, daily parades and traditional celebrations take center stage while human towers known as castellars shock and awe the crowds. The main attraction of this celebration is the “Best Decorated Street” competition, where the “voices” of this fashionable neighborhood are decorated with vibrant and colorful homemade decorations.
Although there are other well-known summer festivals in Barcelona, such as the Sonar music festival and the fiery Nit de Sant Joan, the Festa Major de Gràcia is one of the best examples of local visitors and global Barcelonans alike coming together for friendly festivities.
Staying in Barcelona during the summer
Barcelona is an amazing city, home to some amazing summer activities, and one of the best ways to make the most of the sun-filled days in the city is to rent one of the many holiday apartments in Barcelona. From beach apartments to apartments located right in the city center, you will never be far from a fantastic activity, attraction or even an ice cream parlor! In addition, with many apartments accommodating large groups of people, you can enjoy a great stay in the city with family and friends. Here you can wake up every morning to the crash of the Mediterranean Sea and have access to all the wonderful sites and scenes the city has to offer.
