From the Pipeline – Mark DelMedico

On a long trip out to visit family in Buffalo, I was able to sit down with Mark Delmedico, a famous musician on Plattsburgh Pipeline Radio. Mark Delmedico is a solo acoustic musician from Sauquit, New York, a town located on the outskirts of Utica, New York. Mark’s music can be categorized into several genres including acoustic, folk, classical and rock.

Mark remembers becoming a music lover back in the days of sitting on his front porch in the summer listening to an old transistor radio. Around the age of eleven, Mark started playing the guitar after being interested in hearing the Beatles tune, “Here Comes the Sun”. Mark says “I remember thinking it was the most beautiful acoustic guitar song I’d ever heard and to this day it’s still one of my favourites”. Other musicians who influenced Mark throughout his life are Cat Stevens, Strobes, Bob Dylan and Neil Young.

When he goes out to perform, Mark plays a Gibson J45 Koa acoustic guitar and says “So far, it’s definitely my favorite guitar that I own.” He previously owned a D28 Martin and a J200 Gibson which he really enjoyed playing but they were all sold years ago.

Mark has been making music for many years, he left the music scene in 1985 and returned to it in 2003. Mark got married and had 5 beautiful children and decided that a steady income was best for his family at the time. By 2003, his children, most of whom were in their 20s, were all grown and Mark was able to pursue his music career again.

Since returning to the music scene, quite a few songs have been written and some recorded. Last spring, 10 songs were recorded and the album “Life Ain’t Easy” was completed. Mark’s friend John Liebing did a wonderful job with the instrumentation while Mark sings and plays guitar. Throughout the album, “Life Ain’t Easy”, listeners can expect a clever mix of styles and techniques. The album has something for everyone. “Life Ain’t Easy” is an album that Mark wanted to fast forward with a different genre feel. He feels that an album that seems to last forever will probably turn off more listeners than attract them. Marks says, “I try to write songs that people can relate to, like yeah, I did that or I felt that.” “Also, my wife and I separated and some of the songs deal with that, most of what I write are things I’ve experienced.”

During our interview I was able to ask Mark what his plans are for the rest of the year and also if he has any plans for ’09. He said that after a long year, great recording and releasing albums, he wants to get his health back and he does have a minor surgery scheduled soon. When he heals, Mark plans to return to performing in the Utica area. Mark also plans to record another album in 2009 that will be completely acoustic, so keep an eye out for that!

“Life Ain’t Easy” will be a pleasant experience for new listeners. Fans can access Mark DelMedico’s music by visiting http://www.freewebs.com/markdelmedico, or his MySpace page, and of course listeners can always tune in to Plattsburgh Pipeline Radio to hear any of the songs on his album.
