Sara Bareilles’ Love Song Hits A Contemporary Note
In the summer of 2007, Sarah Baril hit the airwaves with her pop tune “Love Song”. The radio stations got tired, internet downloads burned up the information freeway, it became the iTunes song of the day, it was the Starbucks song of the day. It was placed in an advertisement for Rhapsody. Sarah B played it on the Late Late Show in addition to many others. It seems like everyone and their brothers cringe, “I’m not going to write you a love song because you asked for it because you need one, you see.”
So where did this poppy hit come from? A bad relationship, a terrible heartbreak?
No, the explanation is actually much more interesting than that.
Believe it or not, the song is actually aimed at her label! She wrote the lyrics to express her frustration with them for constantly asking her to focus on more radio-friendly pop songs. This is the classic conundrum, actually. A record company signs an artist because they have that “something special” that sets them apart from everyone else…and later starts pushing them to conform – to change and be like everyone else.
However, I doubt they resent Sarah now. The creative conflict she recorded in “Love Song” brought them a lot of CD sales, and with it a lot of cash. If most songwriters could get them that amount of sales while criticizing them, I’m pretty sure they wouldn’t be mad about it.
In fact, they may even stir up arguments just to make it happen!
However, in the meantime Sarah B. remains the only artist on the radio who has a song that deals with conflict, not with a boyfriend or ex-boyfriend, but with a large corporation.
And I think that’s a distinction that will probably stand.
