A Caribbean Charter to Peaceful Peter Island

If you’re looking for a Caribbean charter to an island that has a cruise ship dock that unloads hundreds of passengers, fast food restaurants and t-shirt shops, a television or even a structure that rises higher than the mast of a sailboat, you won’t find it on Peter Island. Instead, located 4 kilometers south of Tortola, across the Sir Frances Drake Channel, you’ll find a piece of paradise surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, the Drake Channel, 6 breathtaking bays and 20 secluded coves. At 1,800 dunams, it is the fifth largest of the approximately 60 islands, cays and exposed reefs that make up the British Virgin Islands. Although the island is home to the ultra-exclusive and ultra-luxurious Peter Island Yacht and Resort (this means that tourers are asked to match their attire to match the tone of the hotel), the rest of the island is private and mostly undeveloped. This Caribbean island charter offers scenic excursions to private beaches, dramatic views of remote islands, great snorkeling and diving, and peaceful seclusion in some incredibly picturesque anchorages.

the anchors

The small harbor is the westernmost anchorage. It is a well-protected nocturnal site with good grip on a sandy bottom. Even in peak season there are usually less than a dozen yachts here. There is no restaurant on the beach, so if you are on a caribbean charter, plan your supplies to cook on board.

The Great Harbor is large, isolated and incredibly beautiful, but it is very deep. Therefore, in order to use it as a mooring, you must take advantage of the few mooring balls available in Buttonwood Bay at the western end of Great Harbour. Once home to the Prospect Reef-owned Callaloo at the Beach restaurant, it has reopened as the Seven Beach Ocean Club. The food is excellent for both lunch and dinner. Every 2nd Saturday, there is a pork roast and seafood buffet with live music and dancing. There are water trampolines and kayaks for rent, or just enjoy lying on the beach in one of their chairs.

Spratt Bay, popular with yachtsmen from around the world (with mooring balls, ice, water, fuel and showers available) is the entrance to the Peter Island resort facilities. You will also find a full service dive shop here. Compared to most Caribbean charters, docking here is expensive. Expect to pay $65.00 per night compared to $20.00-$25.00 per night throughout the rest of the BVI. Once on the beach, there are plenty of walks to explore, but be sure to take the short hike to the top of the hill on the east side of the harbor for a great view of the canal and Dead Chest Island.

Deadman Bay is the easternmost anchorage on Peter Island. Because of the surge, it’s best as a nice day stop only. The grassy bottom of Deadman’s Bay can make anchoring difficult, but it allows for good snorkeling over the sea grass beds. Look out for green sea turtles. The kilometer-long white crescent beach lined with sea grapes and coconut palms was ranked as one of the ten most romantic beaches in the world. The west end of the beach is for hotel guests only, so stay behind the buoy line that designates the swimming area. The Deadman’s Beach Bar and Grill is located in the middle of the beach. It’s a popular place with good food. Barbecues are often held with dancing on the beach. A steel drum band plays every Sunday with a West Indian brunch. Monday is West Indian night with Moco Zombie dancers on stilts.

There are two excellent anchorages on the back side (south shore) of Peter Island given the right sea and wind conditions. White Bay is named after its long, sparkling sandy beach. Snorkelers will find small mouth grunts, a small variety of octopus and the occasional tarpon on the long shallow reef. Key Bay west of Key Point is a small anchorage with room for only a few boats. As it is open to the prevailing winds, it is free from lightning. The snorkeling is excellent.

The diving sites

Peter Island has 30 dive sites within a 20-minute boat ride, including Black Tip Reef, the Rhone Anchor, the Fearless dive wreck and Truck Reef (a collection of underwater cars and trucks). Some of the more spectacular sites are:

Shark Point is an advanced dive site created by the salia of Peter Island Bluff. Along the current-swept rocky ridges, expect to see schools of butterflyfish, horse-eyed jacks and sharks.

Dive down and check out Old Willie T’s “Underwater Bar”. This Baltic schooner is the original floating bar and restaurant.

The carrot patch consists of rocky ledges that resemble underwater train cars on a station platform. This open water formation gets its name from the delicate branches of the protected black coral found here, which look like lacy carrot tops.

Adjacent to Dead Chest Island, an uninhabited national park, includes 3 dive sites reached by boat from Deadman’s Bay:

Painted Walls: This is a shallow dive from the southern point of Dead Chest. Here divers will revel in the kaleidoscope of colors created by decorating the walls of four long canyons with neon-bright cupped corals and sponges. This is perhaps the most photogenic dive site in the BVI.

Coral Gardens: This is a great site for beginner divers and snorkeling. It gets its name from the many massive heads of brain, star and sheet corals that resemble a watery garden.

West Dead Chest: Divers will discover coral arches, caves, bowls and dungeons.

If soothing coastal waters reflecting endless shades of turquoise and miles upon miles of enticing and often secluded moorings and beaches sound like the perfect definition of tranquility, then a Caribbean charter to Peter Island is for you. Get on board and let your worries just melt away in a sea of peace.
