The Five Best Teaching Aids for Children With Autism and Special Needs

We have over ten years of experience in guiding and teaching our daughter with autism spectrum disorder. Below are some of the teaching aids we used, which we believe were the most successful in her development and learning. These methods can be used with any child with or without autism spectrum disorder, pervasive developmental disorder, or special needs.

Learning aid 1 – Setting up a treatment room

In the beginning what motivated us was the SON RISE program. Liz went to America to Option Institute and did a two-week course on how to deal with a child with autism, working methods and training of a child with autism and how to set up a treatment room for a child with autism and or special needs.

The course is intended not only for parents of children with autism, but also for children with learning difficulties, pervasive developmental disorder (PDD) and children with special needs in general. Also, the course focuses a lot on how to deal on an emotional level with the fact that your child has an intellectual disability, and there is ongoing support if you want it.

So upon Liz’s arrival back home, we set up a treatment room. We used a spare bedroom and painted it bright colors. We set it up with shelves and storage drawers, play equipment, a computer and printer, a table and chairs suitable for the child’s height to work on the table and a stable floor covering. The basic idea was to have a room that the child could identify with as a fun and learning area only, in a place where they would know over time that when they are there it is time to learn.

Teaching aid 2 – switch to a child with autism

One of the very useful things that Liz learned from the SON RISE program was a method to work with autistic children, a way to move to them and that is to reach their level. Get down on the floor and swing with them, spin objects like them, repeat the sounds they make, enter their world. That’s how we got Issy to know us, by doing that! She began to notice when we entered her world and slowly we began to influence her behavior and quench her thirst for learning.

Most children with or without disorders on the autistic spectrum, pervasive developmental disorders, learning difficulties or special needs enjoy learning, they have a thirst for knowledge, it’s just a matter of finding how to get through to them and make learning enjoyable for them and yourself.

Teaching Aid 3 – Applied Behavior Analysis and Discrete Experiment Teaching

The next step for us was to get into Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) and Discrete Trial Teaching (DTT). Liz also sought out and trained caregivers, including June students to work intensively with Izzy and her progress was amazing. Izzy loved being in her treatment room to study. Each session would last two hours, and she would receive up to three sessions a day up to six days a week.

In a relatively short time Issy started learning to count, spell her name, read books, ask for things, say yes and no, pretend play, recognize genders, moods, countless items and much more. In short she started communicating and being aware of her surroundings, we were over the moon! This stuff really works.

Teaching aid 4 – Customized teaching aids and computer-based IT aids

After some time Liz accumulated a wide variety of teaching aids related to the autism spectrum, which can also be used with children with special needs, resources such as – picture cards, shapes, puzzles, color cards, size cards, picture books, gender cards. I also started to come up with some IT or computer based training aids, such as interactive flash cards with sound, and a personal interactive toilet training program. Around this time I was working in Antarctica and I would send Issy online interactive stories of her favorite characters (Snowy and Humphrey) in Antarctica, it really did a lot to teach her to read, she would destroy the stories!

Teaching aid 5 – things children like to do

Another great tool I used to teach Issy the language was her trampoline. She loved jumping on the trampoline and even more so when I joined her, we would play silly games that required her to count or say short sentences. I would point to the sky and make her say short phrases like “touch the clouds in the sky” or “your turn” and “my turn” I would purposely lie on the trampoline until she would ask me to “get up daddy” and “let’s jump daddy”. Using a favorite activity to teach Children is a very powerful teaching aid

Those first days on the trampoline when Issy started learning to talk and we would jump with laughter and sometimes just lie down and look at the birds in the sky were undoubtedly some of the best and most memorable days of my life.

These are some of the autism spectrum teaching aids we found that really worked for us and our daughter Izzy. There are other factors involved in her progress as well as biomedical supplements, physical activities such as swimming and horseback riding, music and sound therapy and what we believe is a safe and enjoyable home environment for all of us.
