How Posture Affects Vocalists’ Live Performance

Posture sounds like a cold and technical word. But the posture a vocalist takes makes a huge difference in vocal ability and effectiveness. Here are some guidelines for posture during a live performance on stage:

Do not do –

  • Don’t stand stiff
  • Don’t lean forward into the audience in such a way that your rib cage tightens in front – this will also cause problems with support and breath control. If you lean forward, do it from the waist to keep your ribs wide open.
  • Don’t strain your ribcage by bending over when you sing while playing the guitar, keyboard, drums, or other instrument.

Made —

  • Stand or sit tall and flexible.
  • Play the instrument with the chest open! Move into the microphone with your legs and body so you can lean back a little – not forward!
  • Stand or sit with your weight balanced on your butt.
  • Feel the Groove – Allow dance-like movement in your feet, legs and spine. It will also transfer energy to the hips and buttocks, and result in more correct support for breathing (the vocal power should come from the pelvic floor).
  • Move into the microphone position (which makes you lean back and open your chest) when using a boom stand while standing, singing and playing. This tip is very important. If you’re using a straight stance, be sure to get close enough that you don’t have to lean forward and close your ribs. Or take the stand in your hand and lean it towards you. Or better yet, take out the microphone and use it to help balance you. Don’t lean your head in to follow the mic – bring the mic back to you!
  • Use confident body language… this is not a condescending position. It’s a caring attitude to the business that tells your audience that you have something good to give them!
  • Keep your head back, chin level, neck relaxed and when you go for a high note, pull your head A little to the side
  • Talk to your hands!… They are connected to your arms, shoulders, spine, rib cage and ultimately your diaphragm. It’s also a good stage presence. Just make it look True… Make sure your hands are part of what you’re saying or singing. Don’t let them become dead weight pulling your ribs down inward.

The posture you assume speaks volumes. Make sure it communicates confidence, courage, freedom and connection. Not only will your audience see and hear the difference, your voice will feel the difference.
