Also known as Suki among his fans, the singing sensation not only limited his talent to singing, but also achieved success as a musical composer, director and lyricist and recently as an actor. Although he aspired to be an athlete from his early childhood, poetry happened to him by chance. Ever since he got his break in the Hindi film industry in 1986, there has been no looking back. Till date he has given his mesmerizing voice to more than hundred Bollywood movies along with other regional movies and albums. Suki has not only surpassed his talent in the Hindi film industry but has a huge fan following in Punjabi as well as Tamil.

His musical career journey:

• Learning Music- The multi-talented kickstarter Sukhwinder started his career at a very tender age of 8 years by signing a melodious number from the movie ‘Abhinetri’ sung by the legendary singer, Lata Mangaskar during a stage performance. His deep love for music grew with each passing day and studied music under the tutelage of popular Bollywood music composer duo Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar and Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma (popularly known as Laxmikant-Pyarelal). He also released his first Punjabi music album, titled: ‘Munda Southhall Da’ marketed by T-Series, before joining the band of musicians.

This music album was a turning point in his music career as it helped him get an award, and decided to pursue music as his profession.

• Struggle to achieve success- Before getting a singing break in the Hindi film, ‘Karma’, this Punjabi-born singer struggled hard to land a role in the tinsel town. He worked as a music arranger in the Laxmikant-Pyarelal group. Although his performance in ‘Karma’ went unnoticed by listeners, he soon got another chance to prove his singing talent in the Madhuri Dixit starrer, ‘Khilaf’. Although the song “Aaja Sanam” was a hit, still the singer was not heard. Again he did not lose hope, and went abroad to get a deeper understanding of different genres of music. In the meantime, he also acted in a Tamil film called ‘Raleshkudu’.

• Skyrocketing Achievements- After a considerable hiatus from the world of Indian music, Sukhwinder returned with a bang after the success of the iconic number “Chal Chahiya Chahiya” from the Mani Ratnam-directed film ‘Dil Se’ in 1998. It was his. A confidence and belief that sustained him even through the odd days of his singing career, earning him the prestigious Filmfare Award for Best Playback Singer in 1999. Since then, the ace singer has witnessed a rise in his profession and managed to bag the Filmfare Male Playback Award again in 2009, for the song starring Shah Rukh Khan, “Haule Haule” from the movie ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’. Other chart-topping songs that Suki has to his credit include, “Huh Hud Dabang” (Dabang), the title track of ‘Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola’, “Lootnewale” (Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola), “Anarkali Disco Chali” (Housefull 2 ), “Banjara Banjara” (Ek Tha Tiger), “Tere Bin Sukha Sukha Saawan”(Kahani), the title song of ‘Chak De India’ and many more. He also sang an authentic Indian song for a Steven Spielberg film. Even his famous song, “Chal Chhaiyya Chhaiyya” was used in 2006 in another picture starring Denzel Washington, ‘Inside Man’.

Contact with Maestro A.R. compassionate:

Sukhwinder, a hardcore fan of Mexican music and culture, owes his success to music maestro AR Rahman. The duo created magic not only in the Indian music industry, but set the stage on fire in foreign countries as well. There is no doubt that it was composer Rahman who helped Suhi re-establish himself in the industry. After the huge success of “Khaiyan Khayan”, both of them worked closely with each other and created several blockbuster works like: “Ramata Jogi” and “Ishq Bina” from Taal; “Jay Ho” from Slumdog Millionarie; “Chinama Chinkumma” (Tamil-Minxi); “Aaj Dil Gustakh” (Blue), “Ruth Aa Gayee Re”, “Yeh Jo Zindagi Hain” (1947-The Earth); “Thoc de Kili” (Hungry); “Pagdi Sambhal Jatta” (The Legend of Bhagat Singh); “Jaane Tu Mera Kya Hai” from Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na; “Aayo Re Sakhi”, “Piya Ho” and “Bhangari Morori” (Water) etc.

Whenever Rahman had to create some musical masterpiece, he mostly likes to approach Sukhwinder to create the magical aura. Rahman being an excellent music composer, arranger, sound editor and sound engineer, he always believes that a good work of art can only be created through experimentation. Thus, a multi-talented artist like Suki always remains his first choice. However, the duo plans to take music to a higher level, where they can express themselves instead of limiting their talent within the Indian cinema framework.

Apart from his association with the living legend, Suki has also associated himself with music director Sandeep Chowta, with whom he wants to set up a hi-tech recording studio in Mumbai.

Sukvander Singh as actor:

Although he never thought of taking up acting as a career, acting happened to him by accident. It was during the recording of the songs of the film ‘Kutch Kriya’ (2010), when the director, Jabir Dehiya approached Suhi to play the lead role. When he saw him recording with expressions and emotions, which was a prerequisite for the lead role ‘Rishi’, the director made him the offer. Although initially reluctant, the singer gave his consent after going through the script. Also in the film he plays the role of a musician, who comes from a relatively small town to Mumbai in order to continue his musical career.

Although the film did not do well at the box office, still the director is keen to relaunch it once again with some changes. However, for Sukhwinder, music is his first love, and it will never take a backseat to acting.

Summary:

Like most singers, Sokwender also enjoys experimenting with music. From the highly acclaimed ‘Anarkali Disco Chali’ to the final mix ‘Dum Dum’, he can sing it all. Recently, he also recorded a motivational song to cheer on the Indian athletes during the London Olympics 2012. Featuring superstars like Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan, the song “Is baar Tiranga London Mein Phehraiga” composed by Salim Sulaiman managed to create the effect, resulting in India coming out in the right colours. winning six medals. Another song “Chak De India” also became the national sports anthem of the country featuring the star singer’s eloquent voice. He also sang for various sports like hockey and kabaddi where India celebrated its victory.
