Kalamandalam Kerala – Center for Performing Arts
Thrissur, the cultural hub of Kerala cradles this eponymous centre. The center is on the banks of Bharathapuzha (Nila) Cheruthuruthy.
This premier performing arts center in Kerala follows Kerala traditions of classical dance forms, in which an ancient gurukul system is disciplined. It offers training for Kathakali, Koddiattom, Mohiniyattom and Thullal. Regular, long-term, short-term and intensive courses are available that turn an amateur into a professional.
Vallathol Narayana Menon, (poet and scholar)’s unceasing passion for Kathakali and the other performing arts paved the way for the establishment of Kerala Kalamandalam in 1930. Chakyar, Thottasseri Chinnammu Ammu are the famous personalities who contributed to Kalamanaldam.
The Kalamanalam bands travel to different countries and create a cultural wave across the world. They participated in various international dance festivals. Kalmanlam also hosts a number of students and researchers from abroad.
In the initial phase, the teams had difficulty meeting the expenses of its maintenance; It was later converted into a grant-in-aid institution fully funded by the government. Course structure: Basics and special training (two hours) will be given at the beginning of all courses. The training of the foreign students will be with the native-born students after they have gained enough experience in that particular course.
Sponsorships are available for the foreign students intending to study in Kerala Kalamanalam. Indian Council for Cultural Relations, Government of India, New Delhi Canadian Institute of Hindu Studies, the NCERT and the American Institute If Indian Studies is part of the Indian institutes, there is a possibility of sponsorship.
