Learning- how much of the school syllabus you studied are you using now? Do you remember how you first learned the alphabet, the difference between ap and aq, and then learned to put them together into words? Spelling tests? Do you remember these things? And where is your phone number stored? Where was it until I mentioned it? I keep my bank card PIN number on my right finger. I can just go to the bank machine and my finger automatically types it in for me, I don’t have to think about it. Now that’s a handy finger!

At first you don’t even know you’re crap at something, because you’ve never tried! Something may be broken but you are not aware of what it is. Maybe you have a vague idea that something is wrong, but you have no idea how to fix it, or indeed, what to fix. You don’t know it’s there until you’re aware of it. Like the first time you tried riding a bike. There was a time when you didn’t even think about riding a two-wheeled piece of metal, then one day you tried, and you got to know the road surface intimately.

Now you know there is work to be done. There is something to learn here. So now you’re excited about the possibility, but you’re also afraid to try and afraid to fail, to look stupid, to make a mistake. Like learning to drive a car – you don’t even think about it until one day, and now you want to be able to drive. Sometimes you have to remind yourself what to do. So now you can overtake and you say “mirror – signal – maneuver” over and over in your head. It’s not fully integrated yet, but you use the skill successfully.

Unconscious competence is the level of mastery, where you use skills automatically. Now they are part of your everyday life and you don’t have to think about it. Today you can start the car, turn on the mobile phone, look at a map, in the dark, in the snow, without batting an eyelid! You never find yourself putting your car key in the ignition and then asking yourself “now how does it work again?” It’s automatic.

Imagine if you could skip all that effort, and make a quantum leap – by going straight to Unaware Competence. how? Train the unconscious mind. It’s faster and shaves years off your learning curve! Imagine the possibilities for a moment”¦

All training should train the unconscious mind of the audience to create change. If you train their conscious mind then they won’t keep it for long, and they will just go back to their old ways. Isn’t this the problem with most training courses? Everyone gets excited for a few days and then the bubble bursts and they’re back to square one. Or worse, because they spent all that money on a team building event and now they’re even more disappointed and cynical.

We act out of unconscious desires and compulsions, and filter information massively, unconsciously.
