F1 2009 PSP Review
F1 2009 PSP
Every now and then a game comes along that you just can’t wait to play. For me this game is F1 2009 for the PSP. This is the first official F1 game since 2007 when Studio Liverpool released their interpretation of the sport.
November 19th was the day I could finally play with my favorite F1 drivers again on some of the best tracks in the world. But was the wait worth it?
The menus are very basic. First you’ll need to enter your name, country and other relevant information that will represent you in online games and (more importantly) career mode. The main menu shows a car in the background and the options you have. You can play Quick Race, Grand Prix Weekend, World Championship, Career, Ad Hoc or Challenges. Once you have selected a car in either mode, the background car will change to the team you selected. This is a nice touch that can go a long way in the overall presentation. Before each race you will see parts of the track, similar to the official TV coverage. The graphics of the game are very reasonable. The cars look good and the tracks are built in detail. Although I have to admit that some of the tracks do look a bit flat. The first real problem comes when you start the race. Frames take a noticeable hit at the start of races and when many cars are close together. You won’t notice it in practice and you won’t qualify – but it will hurt your race experience. The sound is also decent. I like that the engine sounds better than in previous PSP F1 titles. But the sound of KERS activation is really fake and annoying. As well as music in the main menu.
The most important thing about a racing title is that it drives well. F1 2009 fails in this department. All the cars over steer like crazy; A small touch of the direction buttons will be enough to take even the slowest corners. It’s problematic because it makes small repairs really difficult. We also don’t like the inclusion of KERS (7 second per lap boost button) to all the cars in the game. In real life only Ferrari and McLaren used it and it is unrealistic to see it on every F1 2009 contender. After a few hours of driving we got used to the steering which was excellent. But then came the AI. The computer cars have a tendency to hit you from behind. They are too aggressive. But other than that we have small complaints about the computer cars. They can crash into the wall and make mistakes, just like a real person. I was also surprised to see a Brawn car behind me crash in the first corner of the German GP.
Now I must mention the career, as this will be where you will spend most of your time. An agent will contact you by email and update you on F1 events and tests you have with other teams. At first you can test for BMW and Toro Rosso, failing to get a seat will give you a place on the Force India team. Then you will drive in the Grand Prix’ no Whatever; you can’t be a test driver. We appreciate that since most people only care about the race, but it’s just another layer of depth lost in F1 2009. Two other complaints we have about the career mode are that the miles feel very static. They do try to turn make it more realistic by saying things like: ‘Ferrari feels no competition for the 2009 championship’, but in general it doesn’t feel human. The second and final issue we have with the career is the fact that it only lasts 3 seasons. When you’re done with the career you’ll have two exciting situations waiting for you others. First, the challenge mode where you try to beat bite-sized challenges like overtake Hamilton or overtake as many cars as you can. It works well on a mobile system but doesn’t excite an F1 fanatic like me. But Ad Hoc excites me. You can drive a whole season with friend or anyone around the world. It’s great fun but unfortunately I haven’t been able to test it yet.
compared to the past
It’s hard not to compare this game to the last F1 game on the PSP system, which was F1 06. First off, the graphics and sounds are slightly better in F1 2009 but that’s hardly an achievement since the game came out three years later. F1 2009 seems more dynamic when it comes to penalties and AI pace. Causing a collision may cause you to be pulled over or stop and go. It’s really nice and really realistic. The pace of the artificial intelligence is also commendable. We found teams to be faster at Screen GP than others. Ferrari drove in the middle of the field in China but was very competitive in Monaco. This is something we haven’t seen in an F1 game before – ever! The timing has also improved in this game. Now your lap times will compare to the fastest time just like in real life. In F1 06 the times were compared to your personal best. However, F1 2006 has it game when it comes to commentary (F1 2009 doesn’t) and gameplay.
F1 2009 for PSP has huge potential. We like the little touches like the penalty system and the way the game handles time differences. The graphics are really nice and it’s great to finally play with the latest cars and drivers. But serious frame drops heat up the gaming experience, and the handling isn’t even close to what an F1 car should drive.
