Trust me everyone, this game is a real blast from the past, and still entertaining today. The story of the games:
Many say that the story of this game is terrible and it is a big downfall of the game. I mean it’s just like any other game where a princess is captured and you have to save her. The actual basic plot of the game is that Bowser has unleashed an evil spell on the Mushroom Kingdom. The only ones who can save the princess and break this evil spell are Mario and Luigi.
Well, this game was pretty much the first game to start these generic plots. But honestly, what’s not to love about the classic story of Mario saving Princess Peach from Bowser? Nothing, it’s simple and a fascinating story. I’m sure the story doesn’t deserve a high rating because at the time the game came out the story was very unfamiliar and probably sounded a bit trite. But today, we all know about our friendly plumber hero, MARIO.
This game is incredibly fun to play. The aim of the game is to complete each level by running to the end of the level and jumping as high as possible towards the flag. You will encounter many famous enemies like Goombas, Koopas, Piranha Plants and many more. There are coins scattered throughout the game in random areas and hidden in blocks that you have to break through. Once you get 100 coins you get an extra life.
You get scored on how many enemies you kill, how many coins you grab, and various other reasons. Each level is unique and has different obstacles in each level and it’s fun to play. There are 8 worlds with usually 4 stages in each world. The game is great because it has several hidden secrets throughout the game that keep the fun coming. There are even secret minus worlds and warp tubes that give the game a great twist.
The game also mixes in some dungeons to give it a little challenge. You can also play two player where you can play as Mario and Luigi and defeat the evil King Koopa. The few downfalls are that the game is not very long, scrolling on the screen, and it gets frustrating. If you play it fast enough you can beat each level in about 30 minutes.
You can’t go back once you advance a level. The game is frustrating because you can’t even save and there is no continue (you can use a code to start from the world you lost). The game screen just scrolls in the right direction. I would easily give the gameplay of Super Mario Bros 10/10 if there were at least more levels per world.
Of course, you can’t just take on these levels by yourself, so there are a few things you can find there to help you out. First of all there is the power that you can find in blocks throughout the game. The first one you’ll get is the Super Mushroom, and by getting this Mario will grow to double size (Super Mario!) and can take one more hit from an enemy (and revert to normal Mario) before losing a life.
As Super Mario, you also get the ability to break regular brick blocks you come across. This can be extremely useful in several ways, whether it’s finding a secret block or simply taking a safe route. If you reveal a power-up while counting Mario, it will be a fire flower, which won’t let you take any more hits but will give you the most useful fireball throwing power. Fireballs can kill enemies in one hit, and while the same thing can be accomplished by jumping on the enemies’ heads, it’s just much easier to unleash a fireball from a distance and knock the enemies down from a safe distance. As long as you manage to keep up the firepower, you’ll be pretty overwhelmed.
In addition to this, you can also collect 1Up mushrooms, which will give you extra lives, and coins. The coins are collectibles that will give you extra lives when you collect 100 of them, then the counter will reset so you can collect another 100, and so on. All things in the game; Coins, power-ups, completing a level, defeating an enemy are added to the points score.
This score is leftover from arcade games, and won’t really be of any use since the high score is deleted when you turn off your console so there won’t be any competition for it. Not having a save feature might sound bad, but as mentioned the levels can be completed quite quickly and there is always someone around who knows about the secret warp areas.
Speaking of secrets, that’s one thing that’s great about this game. While many other NES games show you pretty much everything, here there are lots of invisible blocks with power or coins, pipes you can enter to reach underground coin collections and sometimes a vine will shoot out of a mecha block you can climb to get to “coin heaven”. A fun thing about all these secrets is that some of them are in plain view, some of them are in a brick block that you just didn’t think to touch.
There are so many blocks scattered throughout each level, with only the question mark blocks sure to contain anything, that you’ll never have time to actually try to destroy all the regular brick blocks. What’s so nice about all of this is that you can play the game so many times and still discover something you didn’t know about. The amount of secret stuff is a very likely factor in the game having great replayability.
The graphics in this game are fantastic for that time. To tell you the truth, I’m still completely satisfied with the graphics of the games today. Although Mario and Luigi have some discoloration and are a bit blocky, it gives you the authentic and warm welcome knowing that this is the first ever Mario game.
The background could just be a blue sky with the occasional green bush or cloud, but that was all that was needed. This means that it is very easy to see the objects in front such as the bricks you can hit or the enemies you are facing.â€‹There is nothing you can complain about with these graphics and especially when the game came out they were great.
The sound is great. I mean it’s not as annoying as most NES games and it was the start of the classic “do yes do do do do…” music! The game has different music for each different type of level, such as dungeons, underwater levels, and land levels. Anything if it’s fun and makes the game even better. The only slight downfall is that the sound effects are a bit lame, but I really shouldn’t complain. All in all it’s the classic theme song that makes me love the game’s music so much.
Another neat thing is that the music is a bit context sensitive, meaning if you let the time drop below 100 seconds left, the music will speed up to let you know you need to hurry. Also, if you pick up a star (an invincible item) the music will change to a different theme that will last almost exactly until you run out of power, a great audio cue for when to start worrying about your enemies again. The sound effects in the game are also good, they are not too complicated, and the jingles that play are great to make you feel satisfied when you complete a task or use a power.
This game is basically a collect and play game. The control layout is so simple yet so great. The game registers every movement in it perfectly. You press forward and Mario definitely goes forward. Many NES games failed to perfect this, but this game certainly did. You can run and jump and you will learn the tricks of how to reach the farthest jump distance and the basic skills in no time. The sweet simple NES controller played great with this game and the game executed every command perfectly.
The NES trackpad isn’t exactly the most advanced piece of hardware out there, but in this game you’ll never feel like it’s missing anything. The D-pad is used to move left and right, and by pressing it down you can crouch, which also causes the pipes to drop if they are “open”.
The A button is used for jumping, and is quite sensitive; A short press results in a low jump and a longer press results in a higher jump. The B button has two purposes – to throw fireballs if you have that power, and on top of that it’s the run button. This works better than you might think, because if you’re running and want to throw a fireball you can just quickly release the button and then hold it again to fire one, without losing much speed.
This is the strong point of the games. I can’t even count how many times I’ve beaten this amazing classic. It keeps you coming back for more. It’s a simple game that’s just fun to play. You can try to beat your previous score. You can play two players to spice it up with a friend or you can try a time track and try for the record. Or if you love me you can just beat it again just for the great feeling of beating the endless classic. This game is the one that started it all. It is there that makes the game much more satisfying to play.
It’s really pretty tough without distortion and with cartridge usage so you can’t spare. I mean my friends were like, yeah it’s super mario bros, i beat him a thousand times. And they came and lost in World 5. It’s not impossible, but I mean it’s challenging. I would say it has perfect difficulty. Not so much that it makes you not want to try and beat it, but just enough to make it fun and it’s a very good balance.
Overall, I love the Super Mario Bros game. A true classic NES game that has stood the test of time, it may not be the greatest game in the entire world just because of how it plays as a game in its own right, but the fact that it revolutionized the home gaming scene when it came out, as well as that it remains very popular with every retro gamer and even enjoys From it to a large extent by gamers of the current generation explains why I find this game so enjoyable.
