Fabulous Facts on the Orchestra

Going to an orchestra, opera, musical theater or mass is a past time that many people enjoy. Music plays a big part in many people’s lives, whether it’s listening or taking part in it. These previously mentioned groups all consist of an orchestra. So what is an orchestra?

The word orchestra comes from ancient Greek. Originally it meant the semi-circular space in front of the stage in the theater where the chorus danced or sang in a Greek play. Later, at the beginning of the seventeenth century when the first Italian operas were performed, a small group of musicians accompanied the singers and sat in a similar space at the front of the stage. And so the meaning of the word orchestra is a body of musicians.

There are different types of orchestras. The group size can be large or small and usually a leader guides them.

large orchestras of about a hundred musicians, are seen in most major cities and perform in a variety of settings. They are often called:

1. symphony orchestra Because of the symphonies they play that require a large number of players. They also play a wide variety of other music.

2. Philharmonic Orchestra which means “loving the harmony of music”

smaller orchestras They come in different types and styles and include the following:

1. chamber orchestra: This orchestra usually consists of about 20 musicians who can comfortably perform in a large mansion room, hence the name. The music performed consists of works from the eighteenth century, for example by Bach and Mozart, as well as more modern works.

2. A small orchestra: This orchestra is slightly larger than the chamber orchestra and plays more modern pieces.

3. Theater orchestras: these orchestras accompany musical theater, opera, ballet and can accommodate up to sixty musicians.

4. string orchestra: This orchestra consists of only about 20 string players. The music played is classical and modern.

5. Jazz orchestras and concerts who play and record light music.

It is interesting to note that a group of brass players playing together is usually called a band, for example Symphonic Band

So what are the instruments of a typical symphony orchestra?

There are four main groups of instruments that play in a symphony orchestra.

string instrument Occupying about two-thirds or three-quarters of the entire orchestra. They consist of about 32 violins (first and second), 12 violas, 10 cellos and 8 double basses plus one or two harps.

Woodwind instrument Consists of flute, clarinet, oboe and bassoons. There are usually about 2 to 4 players in each of these instruments. One player of any type of instrument can double a higher or lower version of that instrument, for example flutists double with a piccolo which is a shorter, higher-pitched flute.

Wind Instruments consisting of trumpets, horns, trombones, tubas and sometimes a cornet. The numbers vary depending on the work done. Some modern works may use 6 trumpets, 8 horns, 4 trombones and 2 or 3 tubas.

percussions Consists of 4 to 5 players. The tools are varied and shake, rub or hit. Examples used in a symphony orchestra are timpani, tom-tom, cymbals, triangles, tambourines and various types of drums.

Where do these musicians sit?

A typical symphony orchestra has a seating plan in the form of a semicircle (from the original meaning of orchestra) with a conductor in the middle front on a raised stand. The layout can vary depending on the conductor used.

The violins sit to the left of the conductor in the order of first violins near the edge of the stage and second violins near the first. The cellos (end of the stage) and violas sit to the right of the conductor, with the double basses behind. The woodwinds sit in the middle with the flutes (front) and clarinet (back) on the left and oboe (front) and sonnets (back) on the right. The barangays sit behind the woodwinds. And the percussion sits at the back of the orchestra

What does the winner do?

The conductor directs the orchestra with a baton and their arms. They tell the musicians all kinds of things like music speed, tempo, expression like loud and soft playing and getting the players in the right place. In rehearsals, musicians correct these aspects. The principal violinist, who is the leader of the orchestra, is responsible for the discipline of the musicians during rehearsals.
