His Most Famous Painting (Violin and Candlestick) – Georges Braque

Georges Braque was a prominent French painter and sculptor of the 20th century, who was also the co-founder of ‘Cubism’. Born on May 13, 1882, in Argenteuil-sur-Seine, between the years 1897 and 1899, he studied painting at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Le Havre, the city where he grew up. He began his artistic journey, experimenting with styles such as Impressionism and Fauvism, before developing Cubism with Pablo Picasso in 1908. Cézanne’s art of ‘Multiple Perspectives’, exhibited at the Salon d’Ottoman, in 1907, inspired the duo towards ‘Cubism’. The French art critic Louis Vaux saw a painting by Braque in 1908 and called it ‘cubism’ or ‘strange cubes’. He perceived the piece as ‘full of small cubes’. This led to the christening of Picasso and Georges’ invention as ‘Cubism’, which the duo were initially unimpressed with. Braque’s magnum opus Violin and Candlestick, painted in the spring of 1910, exemplifies the vibrant persona of the ‘Cubist’ painting style.

Braque’s “Cubist” works mostly amazed the art community, mostly in monochromatic style and on the subject of ‘still life’. This 24 in. x 19 3/4 in. (61 cm x 50 cm), oil on canvas, “Violin and Candlestick” is the result of the music slices and the joined violin sheets rearranged at atypical angles to create a single image that each other, with the shifting surface of shapes, planes, arcs and colors. The painting, while illustrating a three-dimensional view of the subjects on a flat canvas, eschews the traditional “Renaissance” perspective. This is actually ‘Cubism’, which focuses on the representation of subjects, viewed from several angles.

“Violin and Candlestick” was the result of Georges’ obsession with form and stability, which was ignited by a desire to create an illusion in the viewer’s mind to move freely within the painting. To achieve this, the painter concentrated the subjects in the center of a grid like an armature and covered the borders of the objects with black outlines using earth colors. In doing so, he was able to change static volumes to hold complex surfaces on a flat plane, allowing viewers to appreciate the shape more than any other angle. Cleverly identifying and understanding the effects of light to evoke the appropriate emotions and effects of the subjects also served as an essential parameter for Braque’s Violin and Candlestick. He expressed this art of fragmentation as “a technique for approaching the object”.

Georges Braque breathed his last on August 31, 1963 in Paris. His masterpiece, “Violin and Candlestick” is on display at the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco.
