The 5 Key Factors in Worship

What are your thoughts when worship comes up in conversation? Do you only think about the music? Is this the preaching? Most of the time, the focus of worship tends to be on the music. There are various elements that make up the prayer ritual. Music is just one part of a bigger picture. There are many manners in which we show our work to God. In this section we will look at five individual elements that give the worshiper a more complete experience in the prayer service. These things include the following: singing, prayer, preaching, giving and communion. Let’s start with singing first.

Ephesians 5:19

Here is a story about Sam, a new Christian, when he attended a church retreat. The first activity at this event was the singing of worship songs. Sam was very intimidated as he sang loudly. However, now he sings more confidently.

He sings louder. It’s because of a retreat this weekend. At this retreat, the worship leader encouraged everyone to do more than just mumble the words to the songs. The worship leader at this retreat taught everyone to do more than mumble the words. He said, “God gave you a voice to sing praise to Him. This is the time to offer it to Him. If you sing well, that’s great, but if you don’t, it’s time to compromise!”

Encouraged by this word Sam sings. Terrible! But despite the years he discovered the only way to get better is to practice. The difficulty was the only place he could rehearse during the church service.

It took a while for Sam to gain confidence by focusing on who he was singing to. He didn’t care how he sounded. This transition made him worship better.

Eventually, Sam acquired a songbook and began singing during his devotional time. The absence of music only emphasized his vocal weakness. But again, taking the focus off his singing voice and concentrating on offering the songs to God enhanced his experience.

The amazing thing is that Sam enjoys singing more than ever. The realization that by raising one’s voice to God and listening to others one does so is a most wonderful experience.

Most would agree that worship incorporates the act of singing. Singing is a physical action that all worshipers can do to express what is in their hearts. Singing although similar to speaking is quite different. Perhaps the most unique thing about poetry is the ability for a gathering of people to tell their worship together. It is singing as a group that we can express praise, gratitude and thanksgiving. We can at that moment communicate with God. The whole church can offer an offering. Singing can also provide an emotional element to worship. Music causes several emotions and moods despite the melody and rhythm. Music is a language in itself.

Matthew 6:7-15

Let me tell you about a man who took his son to lunch at a local restaurant. They went to the counter to sit on the stools. The father lifted his son to a seat at the counter. They ordered lunch, and when the waiter brought the food, the father said: “Son, we’ll just say a silent prayer.” Father finished praying first and waited for his son to complete his prayer, but he just sat with his head bowed for an incredibly long time. As soon as the son finished praying, the father had to ask him, “What have you been praying all this time?” The boy looked puzzled and answered: “I’m not really sure what I prayed.” “It was a silent prayer.”

Much of our prayer is like this. The words we use are empty. We mention words, but they repeat insincerity. Here’s an epiphany for some of you. When you pray you are simply talking to God. One thing you must understand; God loves when you talk to Him. He wants a whole relationship. By praying you are able to converse directly with God. Some of the elements of the prayer can be a form of worship. Through prayer an open door of communication with God is created.

The prayer can be in silence. You can say it out loud so others can agree. You can even sing a prayer. When it comes to prayer I like to use the acrostic ACTS each letter represents an important part of the prayer. Here are those for the parts of the prayer:

  • A = admiration
  • C = Confession
  • T = Thanksgiving
  • S = Supplication

Adoration in prayer

Take some time at the beginning of your prayer to worship God. This is the time you tell God how much you appreciate and love Him. It is important to confirm your love for him. How many times have you started praying when you asked for things? A great way is to start your prayer is to declare God in what ways you love him.

Confession in prayer

When you pray, your heart should be in the right place. Admit that humans are sinful by nature. Confession is a form of recognition of what is true. Most of the time we confess our sins. God already knows our sin. However, we still have to confess them. God is always faithful to forgive the sins we confess. But I also want to bring another opinion to the confession. This will create a new dimension in your thought process. You can confess the greatness of God. You can confess your faith. Thanks for the truth!

Thanksgiving in prayer.

God has abundant resources available to every Christian. God is in the business of showering you with blessings. The obedient thing to do is thank Him for all the good things He does in your life. No matter the setting, this is a good plan to thank God/

Supplication in prayer

As I said earlier, it is customary for Christians to pile up requests to God. God give it to me, God give it to me. A plea is your petition for something. Prayer needs balance. Often, this is the plea that Christians spend most of their time in. It’s okay to ask. The Bible says to ask. But that should not be the focus. Your prayers should be according to God’s will. Remembering these areas of prayer – worship, confession and thanksgiving before you ask for anything will put you in the right attitude. Your petition to God should be bold. He is a God of infinite resources. Limited. Ask for things beyond yourself.

1 Timothy 3:16-17

2 Timothy 4:1-5

We need to study God’s word. Preaching is an essential part of worship. This element of worship allows you to know about God. It is God’s will that you know Him. He wants you to understand who and what he is. This is the key to his relationship with you. After all how can you worship or love someone you don’t know. That’s why he has preachers.

Preaching is actually an opportunity to dive into the Word of God in the Bible and learn more about who He is. You will learn how He works. The meat of worship is in the Word of God. Remember that music is not just a “warm-up” exercise. Each element is important to a complete worship experience. One complements the other as All the other areas we discuss in the section.

2 Corinthians 9:6-7

OK, with all your heart and soul you have to give. The Christian life is not receiving, but giving.

Growing up at Christmas, it was our family tradition to get gifts for the whole immediate family. I would get gifts for mom, dad, brother and sister. It was often difficult to make a decision on what gift to give. First, because I was young, my resources were very limited. So I had to pass on any overpriced gifts. That left the playing field quite level. But it turned out that my parents already had quite a few items that they already owned. There were only a small number of things I could actually achieve. God’s people are much like that. God owns the universe and everything in it. But one thing we can give is our worship to Him. That’s one thing he really enjoys about his people.

Money is the first thing that most people think of when the topic of giving comes up. Giving money to the church is an honor we can all do. But, I want you to also know that it is beyond that. This is all your life that God wants. You have an amazing opportunity to give all your resources to God. This includes your time, your body, your mind and all your possessions.

When you give God all the resources at your disposal, it is at that time a true sacrifice of praise and worship.

Matthew 26:26-29 And while they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, broke it, and gave it to the disciples, saying: Take, eat; This is my body. And he took the cup, and acknowledged, and let them say, drink all of them; Because this is the blood of the new, which was poured out for many for sins. But I say to you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine until that day, when I will drink it with you in the kingdom of my Father.

Christians experience one of the greatest privileges during the sacrament. This is a moment for real intimacy with Jesus. This is a time of unity. The time has come for the worshiper to bond with his savior. It identifies the believer with Messiah. The sacrament allows us to focus on the greatest gift ever given to the world. It is a moment to remember that Jesus’ death on the cross is the ultimate and final sacrifice for the sins of the world.

brings it all together

As you can see, there are different sides to the worship experience. Each is as important as the other. The key to rich and satisfying worship is balance. The more you balance these five elements in your worship service, the more opportunities you offer the worshiper.
